Can you test a car battery and alternator with this?

Hi! Yes, this is an excellent multi-meter with which you can do that. A fully-charged auto battery will read between 12.5 and 12.8 VDC. You can check your vehicle's alternator by attaching the multi-meter's black and red leads to the black and red battery posts while the engine is at idle. With no accessories on (radio off, etc) you should read 13.7 to 13.9 VDC. IF the vehicle has an AGM type battery in it, then the voltage reading, no load, should be around 13.5 VDC. You can now check the alternator voltage output with a load on it. Turn on some accessories in the vehicle, like the A/C, the radio and the headlights - the alternator's voltage output shouldn't vary more than a 0.1 of a volt from the no-load reading. If the voltage reading drops significantly, then the voltage regulator inside the alternator has failed. These are simple tests that you can make in your driveway with your multi-meter. If you want more sophisticated testing of your battery or alternator, you'll have to take your vehicle to an auto repair shop.........I hope that this helps you a little.
