Classic 2-Way Bird Feeder Sunflower Seed Or Thistle Wild Finch Chickadee Siskin

This is a fine bird feeder for sunflower seeds. I bought two of them. I have chickadees, goldfinches, pine siskins, red finches, a downy woodpecker, red breasted nut hatch, streaked sparrow and occasionally, a scrub jay. It is difficult but not impossible for the bigger birds to get at the food and that, in my case is good. I had to reduce the number of stations to 5 to slow the birds down a bit, they were draining the feeder in one day. I also added a screen below to catch the spills and give the birds a shot at the food before it made it all the way to the ground. I found the screens at a salvage store and made a ring with some of my drip irrigation tubing from which to attach the fixture chain. My only knocks are the food doesn't get guided to the holes at the bottom and that the top is hard to slip off when wet and where I live, that is the case much of the time fall to spring.

I really liked this feeder at first. I like the idea that the perches are short and don't allow the larger pesky birds to feed. The problem I've had is the squirrels have chewed a hole in the flimsy plastic lid, and they continue to unattach it from the wire hoop that holds it. The wire hoop is not very secure. My feeder has fallen on the ground and a couple of the perches came off.

This product will not work for finches. We have fed finches thistle seed for years, and the holes in this feeder are too small for thistle seed OR for the finch to get its beak in to acquire the seeds. Totally useless.
