This book is really great! I’ve been learning Japanese for two years now and I found this set a great aid! It’s really up to date and starts off where you’d want at the beginning and makes it a lot easier to learn! The way the book is laid out is really helpful - worth the money

Very useful

I'm only on chapter 4 so far, however, it's basically very usable to study Japanese and I am enjoying using it. It is really necessary to buy the workbook and the answer book to correctly understand and learn. It's not 5 stars because of a three things: Chapter 3 is a big step up where it starts to regularly use kanji rather than hiragana. This is not sensible because there is no chance, especially with the size of the script that anyone is actually going to learn the kanji in that way (use RTK!) and they add hiragana in tiny script below that you need a magnifying glass to be sure of (e.g. is that a 'ba' or a 'pa'?). This method just makes things slower without adding anything. Secondly the example conversations are almost exclusively in the world of education so you learn a lot of vocab for that but it would be much better to set things in the real world and vary locations etc. Thirdly, the audio, whilst 'authentic' is fast and sometimes quite indistinct which is expected in the real world but just annoying when you are trying to learn.

Really great text and workbook for beginners learning Japanese. This is much better than the Nakama 1 that some universities use and I found this one easier to use and follow. I found the Nakama 1 a bit rigid and academic in scope and the Genki to be less intimidating to use and work through, being easier to get through on your own if you don't have an instructor and are trying to tackle learning Japanese on your own. Highly recommended.
