We could debate the best "gangster film" argument all day and still be no further ahead but what becomes harder to argue are individual acting performances in this particular film. Martin Scorsese brought the very best out of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone. Sharon might be known best for her infamous interogation scene but THIS performance deserves recognition for what it is - outstanding. All 3 performances from these 3 gifted actors, are above reproach and sets this film apart from others in many ways. James Woods also deserves mention. This film is not so loosely based on the history of the Stardust Casino (known in the film as the Tangiers) as it was run by Frank Rosenthal (Ace Rothstein) and the mob enforcer turned local thief Anthony Spilotro (Nicky Santoro). The film is as equally big and glamorous as it is violent and appalling. It shows the incredible complexity of that kind of life and how things can come crashing down so easily. If it can be agreed upon that the Godfather series is the standard by which all others are typically judged, this film deserves to be recognized in the same vein, in it's own right. Just like the Godfather, you can't watch even 30 seconds of it, without being sucked in, until the end. It’s inescapable.
