destruction of a man
Funny. I agree with the other writers this soundtrack is 5 stars but don't think they "got it".This soundtrack is genius. Not because of how good it is but because Herbie and Dexter were able to place these songs around the theme of the movie. I don't think I have seen a better job of that other than Prince's Purple Rain. Also the movie story is great. It is a story similar to "Death of a Salesman" about a man battling his own character flaws. A story of how we have options in life but are often unable to control the events that enter our life. Shape it. And how we often have difficulty coping due to internal weakness and or substance abuse as an escape.Although a temporary one. Ultimately the character, and Dexter Gordon suffered because of their internal pains. He used music as an outlet but it was never enough to heal him. While we benefitted from his genius. No this movie is more than a soundtrack. It is man vs himself. His strengths. Evils. And the world. I must confess I watch it when I want and need a good cry like Death of a Salesman. It is a movie you must watch as a jazz fan. And own a copy for life.

Great jazz, with or without the movie.
After seeing "Round Midnight," I knew I had to buy the soundtrack, and if you too have seen the movie, you know what I mean. All the recordings on here were recorded live for the movie, which gives it a great intimate feeling. At the same time, the sound quality on this particular CD is surprisingly good.If you haven't seen the movie you should know that even though much of the soundtrack does features dexter, the supporting cast is just as important featuring Herbie Hancock, as well as occasional appearances by the likes of Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Bobby McFerrin, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and others.Overall, a very solid soundtrack with memorable versions of many standards and some of Dexter Gordon's and Herbie Hancock's finest playing.

Round Midnight a Shameful Wast
this is an unfortunate waste of time and effort in making this CD; for while the artists themselves are great the result is quite poor. We see a person too poor to buy a glass of wine and see Gordon play and yet is able to develop a friendship with him that's inexplicable. We see scenes that make no sense at all and with awful acoustics so that the dialogue is simply not understood. Scenes of Dexter Gordon, drunk and collapsed over a car hood and then being taken to a hospital only to have that friend intervene and manages to get Gordon home to his apartment and to bed. Snatches of the sax are often too few and must make way for dialogue that can't be heard or understood. The direction is sporadic, uneven and amateurish. This is not a spellbinding piece of entertainment but rather an exercise of futility that does not, for one moment, capture the musical abilities of Dexter Gordon or Herbie Hancock. It's unfair to say that Gordon's sax is showcased because it isn't, not when you see Gordon buy a treat for a small child or being served at a bar that results in a drunken stupor.

sound improved over original cd pressing
Mixed jazz stylings of the 1930's-1950's. Prime movers Herbie Hancock with deference to Dexter Gordon.

Round Midnight
The music was classic Dexter Gordon. The saxaphone was clear and made me reminisce of a era was vivid and full of the simple complexities of jazz with soul within a Parisian setting. The album and its syncopation with sound is like erecting the Eiffel Tower in jazzy Harlem in the 40's and 50's.

'Round Midnight Soundtrack.
I had the original tape edition of this until I lent it to someone, so it's nice to re-acquaint myself with it on CD – and with a bonus track that wasn't on the original.I love the film; the music on this disc was mostly arranged and supervised by Herbie Hancock and he plays on all but one track – the array of important contemporary jazz talent on the disc needs no further comment; if one likes the film, this is a good reminder of that, and a fine album just on it's own.The CD has a playing time of 64. 25 minutes; shame there are no sound samples, Amazon.A second CD of further tracks recorded for the film “The Other Side Of Round Midnight” is available with the same mix of personnel – worth pursuing if one likes this album.

A very listenable album.
This 1986 album is music taken from the soundtrack to the film "Round Midnight" (apparently not the complete soundtrack). Altogether eleven tracks lasting around fifty minutes or so (plus a "bonus track" of Dexter Gordon's "Round Midnight" from 1976 lasting 13 minutes).Although the CD is released under Gordon's name it really ought to have been released under the name of Herbie Hancock who plays on ten of the eleven tracks, and was the main arranger. Gordon plays on just five. Other musicians involved include Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Pierre Michelot, Billy Higgins, John McLaughlin, Chet Baker, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Bobby McFerrin and Lonette McKee (quite a gallery). The music is not "original film score" (despite being awarded an Oscar!) but is a collection of jazz tunes such as Jimmy Rowles "The peacocks", Bud Powell's "Una Noche Con Francis" or Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning" with lesser know tunes. With such a galaxy of stars it would be invidious to select best tracks. An interesting variety of tunes and combination of musicians. The bonus track is very good too.Not quite a five star album but nevertheless worth listening to.
