this says 40 amp, is that 40 per pole or 10 per pole with 4 poles?

It means 40 amps per pole. Each pole has a set of normally open contacts with a nominal rating of 40 amps. A word of caution: the type of current passing through the contacts is what really counts. For example, if the current is inductive, say from a motor with heavy inrush starting current, the current carrying capacity of the contact is less than 40. Generally, you would de-rate the contacts by at least 20% if passing inductive current. That would change their capacity to only 32 amps.

Would this work for tennis court lights as a relay switch?

Yes it would! We've been using them for the entire outdoor lighting system of a 250 unit condominium complex with no issues. Just make sure the full load current is below 32 amps (to allow for arc-striking current in HID fixtures, etc.)
