If you're not familiar with the Manfrotto brand (I wasn't), this is the original version of this tripod. The dozens of similar tripods you've seen at half the price are cheap knock-offs. Unlike the copycats, this tripod features WEIGHTED legs. This provides the extra stability needed to prevent the tripod from dumping your equipment into dirt, and helps keep lightweight devices from being shifted around by the wind. The tripod is only weighted to hold 1 kilogram, but in use it will hold much more. The ball head adjustment mechanism is also more robust. Depressing a spring-loaded button allows you to effortlessly reposition the camera. The ball has tiny ribs all over it, which get tightly gripped and lock the mount down very solidly. I can't force it to move by hand if the button isn't depressed; my camera doesn't stand a chance of budging it. The knock-offs are not so well built, and you may or may not experience some slippage once you've lined up your shot. The design is fantastic. I purchased this tripod to use it for indoor macro photography, but I will end up using it for much more--possibly more often than my full-sized tripod. The legs swing out easily, but are held in place by friction. No clamps to fasten or unfasten, no slides, nothing. The mount, as mentioned, adjusts at the push of a button. You could realistically deploy the tripod and adjust the mount in two seconds flat. The whole thing packs down roughly to the size of a small Red Bull can, so it's easy to bring it along in a bag or pocket. This will see frequent use on car hoods, tables, roadsides, and my workbench. It is flat-out the best camera accessory for the money that I've purchased.

Very sturdy for such a small and simple tripod - easily took the weight of a Canon DSLR fitted with a 24 -105 Zoom very stable. Fits easily into my medium sized Lowenpro Camera Bag. Ball head is easy to adjust and stays put when locked, as you should expect from a tripod. Great performance at this price point.
