A certain novelty persists in leu of manual NFC chips.
You could just write the gameplay functions into your own tech, but to have three unknown friends waiting for you when you are ready to say hello to villagers after prepping an island for others to also call a home is a Certified gameplay experience you can't refute. I've even thought of crafting these cards into diorama exhibits, but I'd rather the surprise not be ruined for myself either when the time comes. That's what makes these worth it if you aren't specifically out to just hoard or collect them.
