Amazon Basics Smart Dimmer Switch, 3-Way, Works with Alexa Only, Voice Control, Wi-Fi Light Switch, Schedule, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, No Hub Required, White

Installed 3 of the 4 I received and all of them involved some elbow grease to jam into the electrical box. Was unable to install the 4th one since I found that if the light fixture you are sending it to does not accommodate dimming, it will start to slowly turn itself on (like it does with all these switches to be "fancy") but then turns itself off around 60% like it blew a fuse. Yes, I should have bought a switch when all I needed was a switch, but at the time the sale made the dimmer a cheaper option and didn't realize it would be an issue. Lesson learned.

I was a little leery that the online description as of 04/06/24 said this switch uses just one traveler wire. 3 way circuits always have two travelers. But I wanted to check it out their innovation as I have Amazon plugs and Echos in my house. I have also installed multiple single pole and 3 way smart switches from other brands. I know how to wire two travelers, I've got neutral wires, and my existing setup had two working standard 3 way switches that functioned just fine. BTW, the included instructions showed a different wiring setup than the one in the product description. Unfortunately, neither worked for my setup. 5 stars for innovation reduced to 1 star for execution. The positive: once it was hooked up, Alexa did automatically sense the switch, connect to WiFi, and add it to My Devices. The negatives: I was never able to get the switch to function as designed with my LED fixture, the Amazon switch, and a standard switch in the circuit. I am assuming this may have something to do with the low power draw or the dimmer function (not likely, I know). In the best wiring configuration - I tried them all - I could turn the fixture on and off from the Alexa app - but once I used the standard switch it turned off and would only flicker on briefly when I flipped the standard switch. Also, when the fixture was lit it buzzed (search for the other brands that use the technology that eliminates this). No shorts, not incorrect wiring. I disconnected all the wiring, started from scratch, and used an NCV and a meter to confirm the continuity on each wire. Same results. I swapped the smart switch with the standard switch just in case I incorrectly identified the "load" side. Same results. I put the old standard 3 way switch back and everything worked with no buzz. Insanity is trying the same thing over and over with the same results. So I am returning this switch and suggest that if you are using a single low power LED fixture and a standard switch you try a smart switch that accommodates two travelers in its wiring, doesn't need to be on the "load" side, and doesn't cause buzzing.

Works as advertised but installation is tricky and the written instructions skip some key steps (probably bc they don't want to assume how your wiring is set up). While I am DIYer, I have ALOT of experience with electrical wiring, definitely more than most. 2 key things you need to know - 1) The switch must be the switch that is wired to the light (the instructions DO actually say this); 2) You will need to re-purpose one of your travelers on the wire between the switches and use it as the "Line" for the smart switch. You will only have one traveler from the first switch to the smart switch. This is not clear in the written instructions/steps but you will see it when you closely study the wiring diagram (at the bottom of the page) which is (as always) showing you end state of how the wiring should look when you are done. As a baseline, there are 3 different ways to wire a 3 way, mine looked like this (I believe this is pretty standard when power starts at the 1st switch) when I started: First switch (3 way) - 14/2 power (Line) attached to common terminal, 2 travelers from a 14/3 wire going to 2nd switch (red & black) attached to traveler switch terminals (neutrals (white) from "Line" and 14/3 capped together in box), at 2nd switch (3 way) - the 14/3 travelers were attached to traveler terminals on 3 way, 14/2 wire going to light with black connected to common terminal on switch, and white capped with white from 14/3 wire from 1st switch. to make this work, I took the black traveler wire and capped it to the "Line" wire in the first box. So the Line is attached to common terminal on 1st 3 way switch and the black traveler going to the smart switch. The first box now only has one traveler (red), the other traveler in 1st box has no wire (this is in the diagram). In the 2nd box (the Smart Switch), the red is connected to the brown wire, and the black traveler is connected to the "Line" wire on the smart switch. My configuration only used one smart switch, there is a configuration using 2 smart switches and I believe the set up is the same as what I described. If you are unable to baseline your existing 3 way light configuration or don't understand what I described, you should call an electrician. Alexa set up was a snap - opened Alexa app on my phone and it automatically discovered smart switch, I just had to rename it. Works great! Would have been 5 Stars if install instructions were a little better. Tried to call Amazon support for help - it was 15 minutes of my life I will not get back. Found more help in reviews/comments but decided to post my own review with my specific configuration.

Since this is an Amazon basics product it was easy to set up, and integrated right into my Alexa environment without any hassle whatsoever. However that wasn’t necessarily a positive thing. Since there is no third-party control, there are some things it doesn’t handle as well as other products. For instants when one of the two light switches needed to be reset I had to take apart the light switch cover in order to scan the barcode again. While this is a simple thing, I don’t need to do this with any other smart switch I use. there is a sequence of holding the button down for a period of time that will also cause it to go back into pairing mode, but again you need to scan the barcode about half of the time anyway. Finally one of the two switches I had simply stopped responding, and seems to have deleted itself from the system, and I cannot seem to do anything to bring it back. It is an inexpensive smart switch, but it is a very expensive dumb switch. And as such I feel that all the other smart switch options are still better than this one. And I will not be using any more of these in my environment. I have dozens of smart switches, with multiple brands, but over several years. And I can honestly say that while this was easy to bring online it was also the most trouble I’ve had with a smart switch yet. I won’t go into the fact that it is also limited to the Amazon Alexa ecosystem, since that is obvious. But with the upcoming matter support in smart products I feel that things that are limited to a single ecosystem are simply a bad investment down the road. Additionally this is now the only switch in the house I cannot control from my other smart assistant devices. Given that it’s cost isn’t any lower than several superior products, I don’t really see a reason to go with this product unless you are 100% Alexa only, and want the smoothest installation process with that platform. All in all this was not a bad switch, for the one that is still working, and may be a good fit for you if you understand its limitations. But many competing products cost the same or less, offer more features, and more integration with alternate smart assistants, and potentially have better troubleshooting capabilities should that be necessary (and it likely will be). So use this product if you want, but know that it doesn’t seem quite market ready to me, and I’ve seen a lot of not market ready products on this home automation journey.

It works. I have tried many of the cheaper brand dimmers that Amazon sells because I used a lot of them for a new house build we did. While spending more than $50 each on Lutron or Leviton does work well, I needed something cheaper. The issues you will run into will include the dimmer making an irritating buzzing sound, interference between one dimmer and another of the same kind and not getting smooth or complete dimming. I bought and tested these Amazon Basic Dimmers on some 6 and 8 inch LED wafer lights and it worked perfectly, no buzz, no interference and immediate recognition by Alexa to boot. At the price point I needed, these were solid, dim well and look high quality. Thumbs up!

I have over 20 of the three way dimmer switches installed all over my home. A number of them as a single pole, four pair in three way installation. Below are my experiences over the last few months. Hope it helps others. Single pole switch application – Switch A to Light physical application - Unconnected to Alexa works as expected – Turns on and off manually, dimmer works in multiple steps - Connected to Alexa works as expected – Turns on and off with voice control, dimmer works in multiple steps Three way switch application – Switch A to Light to Switch B physical application - Unconnected to Alexa Doesn’t work as a normal three-way switch 1. Turn the light on with switch A – One has to press twice on switch B to turn the light off. The first press takes over the control from switch A, hands it off to switch B – Second press turns the light off – Same applies vice versa 2. Dim the light with switch A – One has to press the dimming control twice on switch B to control the light. The first press takes over the control from switch A, hands it off to switch B – Second press controls the light - Connected to Alexa – Really doesn’t work 1. EITHER switch A or switch B connected to Alexa but NOT BOTH – Let’s assume switch A is connected to Alexa to explain the situation (really doesn’t matter which one) a. On and off as well as dimming will work as long as you ONLY use voice control (pretty much like a single pole application) b. If you manually control (on/off/dim) the light with switch A , voice control works as well (pretty much like a single pole application) c. If you manually control (on/off/dim) the light with switch B, voice control is simply disabled. I suspect because the Alexa connected switch is unable to take control over from switch B – You have to manually turn the light off with the switch that isn’t connected to Alexa to reset the situation 2. BOTH switch A, AND switch B are connected to Alexa – You have to give the switches each a name, say L1 and L2 a. You do NOT create a group to pair the switches together. i. You can voice control (on/off/dim) the light calling for either L1 or L2. ii. If you start with a switch (say L1), you should end with that switch as well. As an example, you can’t say turn on L1 and turn off L2. iii. The dimming is questionable at best. You can say what you want but the dimming controls are physically limited to high and low iv. The voice/manual limitation persists. Voice and manual control (on/off/dim) have to happen on the same switch. If you voice control L1 followed by manual control L2, you have to go back to L2 and turn off L2 to reset the situation b. You DO create a group to pair the switches together; say Living room to include L1 and L2. i. You can voice control (on/off/dim) the light calling for Living room ii. The dimming is questionable at best. You can say what you want but the dimming controls are physically limited to high and low iii. The voice/manual limitation is hap hazard. The installation can go into a total inconclusive state where lights are stuck on being on at a random brightness. The only way out is to pull the reset level from both switches and start the whole installation over again (connect switches to WiFi and so on)

but whoever wrote the instructions needs to go back to instruction writing school. The three page pullout diagram at the beginning of the manual is the one to refer to as the diagram in the 3-way wiring section can be confusing (the drawing shows the ground wire going to one of the poles on the old switch). It would also help if it was identified that when replacing an existing 3-way set up (which I think 99% of people are doing), you basically need to turn the other switch into a single-pole switch. Rather than having the two traveller wires between the switches, you repurpose one of the travellers and hook it up with the live in order to have a live go directly to each switch. Once installed it works great and the fact that it was already connected to my Amazon account and I didn't need to set up wifi was a bonus. I have no idea there is a timer function so I didn't rate this aspect. If this timer function is from Alexa then I wouldn't consider it a function of the switch.

The instructions suck… you basically have to add a pigtail and give constant power to one of the travellers and then it works perfectly … it is a fake three way that works as it should.. the one traveller that gets power only when the switch is up for example is enough to signal to the dimmer to toggle the power. Once you figure that out, installing it in a three pole setup is easy … sucks the instructions were not really clear .. but basically always power the black, sometimes power the red and you are good to go
