Can this machine do a good cover stitch?

Yes, I purchased and within the day I was able to create a beautiful cover stitch both narrow and wide and a 3 stitch. Threading was not as complicated as mentioned. I love this machine

I have been using a brother 1034d. is this singer any harder to use than the brother?

I never used a 1034D, but it is just a serger and the Singer is two machines in one. It serges and topstitches as well. That being said it also comes with all the extra feet as well. It is not any harder to use most likely than your current serger but does have the additional conversion ability to be changed to a topstitch machine plus it has 5 thread capability. So there is a learning curve due to that. The Singer machine once you learn the threading is easy as you don't have to deal with the thread tension, which takes some of the difficulty out of the process. which gives you more time to sew. The manual is quite detailed and pictures and written instructions show and tell you how to thread the machine for whatever stitch you need to use.

Does this machine do heavy material?

The Singer 14T968DC serger is a home serger. It can sew several layers of denim weight fabric, but may not be suitable for 4-5 layers of upholstery type fabric. This machine does not have presser foot pressure adjustment so too thick of fabric will raise the presser foot high enough to release the tensions.

Has anyone's clutch button gotten stuck in the up position? That's the button that switches your serger between coverstitch and overlock mode.

So, I hadn’t used my machine in a while, then decided to sew some spring tops. I thought my clutch was jamming also, but then was reminded by these handy instructions posted on the machine about moving the hand wheel so that the drive shaft is in the very right hand position prior to moving the clutch. Once I did this, had no issue whatsoever moving my clutch. Never have to force the clutch if its in this position. Hopefully others are not forgetting to do this too, and then damaging their machines somehow while trying to move the clutch.
