Below I have a technical answer, but first I would like to address what I am guessing are your general concerns/questions: 1) will this leech toxins/carcinogens into my food, 2) is it hot/cold safe, and 3) is it better than disposable plastic baggies?

1) food- and medical-grade silicones are generally considered safe by experts with out current level of knowledge. That said, there is some evidence that silicones are more likely to leech into oils, so for long-term storage avoid fatty foods and generally do not use to store oils or very oily foods (to be safe).

2) food grade silicones are remarkably resistant to heat, however, again, you likely want to avoid oils and fats and even more so when hot - heat can increase the rate of leeching (think about how much faster salt dissolved in hot water than cold)

3) silicones are highly reusable and are almost certainly a better choice for the environment, SO LONG AS YOU REUSE THEM FOR YEARS. And I mean on the order of decades, maybe even passing them down to your children. Silicones are highly persistent (they don’t break down), so to make sure we as a society don’t replace one form of trash with another, it is vital that reusable materials like silicones be used for their full lifetimes. Additionally, while silicones are slow to break down, they will also form micro plastics, so to minimize the presence of micro plastics in the environment, we want to minimize the amount of silicones in use. What I mean by this is not “don’t buy this product,” but instead consider this product for this use of a reusable bag, but then get ceramic and metal bakeware, ceramic/metal/wooden utensils, etc. be strategic and thoughtful about limiting your use of silicones and then take care of them so they can last a long time and really do their part to help the environment.

Technical answer: depending on your definition, 100% or kind of not really. Silicone is a class of polymer (long chains made up of repeating units) that utilize alternating silicon-oxygen bonds instead of carbon-carbon bonds that traditional “plastics” use. Most silicones do incorporate carbon-based (“organic”) functional groups (these are little groupings of atoms with specific characteristics decorating the long polymer chain), so depending on the exact formulation of the silicone, it may or may not be free of carbon structures.

Question 2

The whole point of peva is to replace carcinogenc pvc. the point of silocone food storage is to avoid petrochemical peva. why does this have all 3!?

I don’t know but there’s no cause for concern because after about 2 weeks of use these bags won’t seal anyhow so your food will fall out before the pevas can seep into it.

It says pvc free yet under materials the first thing.  listed is pvc. Which is it?
