Can I use the one with only a single slot(The one that cost $40) for cloning?

Yes you CAN clone with this when upgrading your computer SSD to a faster and/or larger SSD. 1. Get cloning software and install it. 2. Leave the original drive in the computer, and connect this single space dock. 3. Put the new drive or target drive you want to clone to in the dock. 4. You just use cloning software and clone the drive in your computer (usually the C drive) to your new drive in this dock following the cloning software directions. 5. When done let it cool down and install the newly cloned SSD in your computer and boot it up. If you used the cloning software correctly - that's it EZPZ. I have used mine, this same single slot Acasis dock, to clone two M.2 NVMe drives in my two newest computers without any issues. The drives in this dock get very hot so I would let it cool before doing another. On the second one I used a fan on the desk blowing at it just to be safe, after doing the first one just fine without a fan.

will a samsung drive be seen as a samsung drive with this unit?

I know you stated the samsung drive will not be seen, only the device. However, if you are using the samsung migration software/tool to clone to a new SSD, will it be seen by the Samsung Migration Software?

Will it take a Samsung 980 pro with the heat sink attached?

Yes. I use it with one with an even larger heatsink on it. Just make sure you don't install the heatsink too far forward. The same distance you would for motherboard install and you'll be fine. I've so far used it with the WD gaming drive and the 980 Pro one with both the large and PS5 friendly heatsinks.
