Good novel to use during a unit on Peru
"Vida o Muerte en Cusco" is a 3rd/4th year TPRS novel. There are 10 chapters and a glossary in the back. As another reviewer has stated, it uses subjunctive. Present tense, preterite, imperfect, and future are used as well. Lots of culture is given in the book about sites and food especially. In "Vida o Muerte en Cusco" Elena Garcia and her mom go to Peru for a vacation. Elena starts off experiencing a lot difficulties, namely, altitude sickness, culture shock, the loss of her luggage, and street children. Elena and her mom keep running into one street child, Marco, in particular. Elena and her mom go walking the "Camino del Inca" during which her mom is injured. Mrs. Garcia ends up in the hospital. Will she recover? Will Elena get over her culture shock and like Peru? This book held the students' interest and they wanted to keep reading. The ending, unlike many TPRS books, wasn't abrupt. It wrapped up things well.

Excellent book for past and present subjunctive.
This is a super book for teaching the subjunctive! It is also an excellent cultural review of el Peru. I spent 3 weeks in el Peru and the infromation is right on and written in a very interesting manner! I highly reccomend this novelette.
