Yes the wax paper goes in the press first. That is what keeps the meat from sticking to the press. After you remove the burger I reuse the same paper 2 or 3 times to save on papers.

I put the gwhole non-stick burger press on the top shelf of the dishwasher many times and have had NO problems what so aver.

can this be used on the hot grill as a burger press?

We have never tried to use on grill or frying pan. I don't think I want to try either. Besides, if you press on cooking burgers you squeeze the juiciness out of them and that makes them tough and dry when it comes time to eat. I'd just stick with using it before cooking burgers as it is intended.
