Great sequel to the original
Horrified: American Monsters is a cooperative board game for 1-5 players that was first released in 2021. The game is designed by Prospero Hall and published by Ravensburger. It is a well-designed game that's easy to learn. This game has great production quality, a vibrant look, and multiple difficulty levels. It can also be played as a solo adventure. The rules from Horrified: American Monsters are basically taken verbatim from the original Horrified. If you're familiar with the original Horrified, save yourself some time and just read up on the monster section in the rules for this game. This time you face The Jersey Devil, Mothman, Chupacabra, The Banshee of the Badlands, The Mothman, and The Ozark Howler. (they called it "American Monsters," not "U.S. Monsters") A new map with a refreshed layout and unique monsters offer new (and actually fun) challenges. The gameplay is quite straightforward: players must move around the town collecting items and weapons that can be used to defeat the monsters. Each monster has unique abilities and weaknesses, and players must use strategy to figure out the best way to defeat them. One of the strengths of Horrified: American Monsters is its theming and presentation. The game board, player pieces, and monster miniatures are all beautifully designed and well-crafted, capturing the classic horror movie aesthetic perfectly. Cooperation is definitely needed to defeat these beasts. Communication is essential and sometimes unconventional choices will work the best. But despite the great gameplay of cooperative play, the reason to purchase this game is for its solo mode. It excels. The rules are nearly identical to cooperative ones, with only a few changes needed. When playing solo, the rules have you playing as a single investigator, but try using a pair, it works so well. (think Skully and Muldaur). You probably will never go back to playing as a single investigator again. Its replayability is also high because of the different monster combinations and difficulty levels that can be chosen. Above all, it’s the feel of the game that matters, and this has more of a sense of place than the original. The risks of losing are just as great as ever, and the monsters can be every bit as terrifying as the movie villains of the main game. The combinations of unique monsters and random elements will make each play experience completely unique, and allows for a wide range of challenges. Overall, Horrified: American Monsters is a fun and challenging game that is well worth playing, especially if you are a fan of solo/cooperative board games and/or classic horror movies. Get this game. You will be glad you did.

Love this cooperative game!
We bought this game for our family after playing the Classic Monster version at a friend's house. It takes some time to set up and learn the rules (each monster has its own rules based on their mythology), but very fun to play. The quality of the game pieces and game play is high quality. We did purchase the D and D and the Classic Monster version for friends. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys cooperative games to check this out.

Great addition to our kid friendly collection
My ten year old and I love playing this game. It's hard enough so that it doesn't get boring but not too hard that non-board gamers find it intimidating. Easy to scale to make more or less challenging depending on which monsters you choose. This is a cooperative game where the players work together to defeat the cryptids who have overtaken the town. The players are "investigators" with special abilities and moves and there are also citizens NPCs who you have to protect. Each death by a citizen or a player raises the terror level which can result in losing if it gets too high before the monsters are defeated or if the monster card deck runs out. We've had three play throughs so far- the instructions could be a little more clear on some of the monsters (Bigfoot for example) but I recommend just going for it and learning as you go because it makes more sense when you can understand it in context. Really good quality pieces, the box is very nice and sturdy, monster pieces are thick plastic with fun detailing and solid bases. Overall, a great game for families with older kids or adults, especially those who are fans of monsters and crytpids. I enjoyed learning the lore behind some of the lesser known monsters.

Pretty fun beginner co-op game
Horrified, a co-op game inspired by classic monster movies, showcases clever thematic design and a sense of urgency through various objectives, limited actions, and a race against time. Yet, it falls short in delivering unexpected surprises due to the lack of a mechanism akin to Pandemic's Infection Cards. Player agency and strategic depth also suffer in Horrified. Decision-making often feels straightforward and lacks complexity, while the limited number of board locations simplifies travel. The game's linear nature may leave seasoned gamers wanting more. Despite these critiques, Horrified is an accessible entry-level co-op game, simplifying the complexity of games like Pandemic. Its classic monster theme and thematic mechanics make it appealing to those looking for a straightforward, thematically rich co-op experience.

Fun but not as good as earlier version
I loved the Universal Monsters version of Horrified, and I love cryptids, so I bought this edition, too. Unfortunately, this version has loopholes and typos and a desperate need for some rules clarifications that the previous version didn't have. The graphic design of the monster cards and instructions, while definitely on-theme for the subject matter, was not as clear as the bold graphic style on its predecessor, and was generally a little harder to read. It's still fun, but considering it came after the Universal Monsters version, this one just seems a little sloppier and less polished, and at times frustrating for the wrong reasons. That said, the board and components are good quality, the storyline and gameplay are interesting and engaging, and the little monster minifigures are awesome. If you're more into cryptids than classic monsters and you don't mind interpreting the rules a little bit when you hit a snag, you'll probably love it. But, if you're on the fence between versions (and/or you already have the Universal Monsters one and, like me, you wanted to add to your collection), you're better off sticking with that version instead of this one.
