STUNNING 1981 SHOW FROM A NEWLY INSPIRED BANSHEES • By the beginning of 1981, Siouxsie and The Banshees had released three albums to date, and were planning their fourth. Recorded at Surrey Sound studio with Nigel Gray as co-producer, Juju was released on 19 June ‘81. Featuring new guitarist John McGeoch – formerly of Magazine – the album met with much critical acclaim, notably for McGeoch’s un-orthodox playing and Siouxsie’s ever-creative vocals. Later deemed a classic of post-punk, in 1995, Melody Maker writer Cathi Unsworth described Juju as "one of the most influential British albums ever". • The Banshees had been performing cuts from the new record live since February ’81, and by March they were in the full throes of a major UK and European tour. Among the finest gig the band played during this jaunt was on 7th July, when they headlined at De Nieuwe Kade, in Tiel, the Netherlands. • Recorded for live radio broadcast across much of mainland Europe, the show was a dynamic performance and is still remembered by many early fans as a milestone event. This new CD now features this remarkable live performance for the first time on CD. Bonus cuts here come from the Banshees equally strong concert, a couple of months before while still touring in the UK, when they played at Warwick University on 7th March Tracks: 1. Israel 4:36 2. Halloween 3:47 3. Spellbound 3:37 4. Arabian Knights 3:05 5. Placebo Effect 4:17 6. Pulled To Bits 4:16 7. Tenant 4:34 8. Headcut (Stopped) 1:24 9. Headcut 4:57 10. Nightshift 6:27 11. Peak Era Banshees
The Banshees live in Holland, July 1981, a few weeks after the release of Juju. This showcases the group at the very peak of their powers. The performances are powerful, committed and full of energy, the band clearly have complete belief in the material they are producing at this time. Siouxsie's vocals are occasionally a little wayward, as she had a tendency to do at times, but the three musicians are faultless, delivering crunching versions of what would become their most celebrated era.The sound quality is excellent, good enough for an official release for a recording from over forty years back (God, is it really that long ago!!). A perfect companion to Juju, think of it as the extra disc in the 'deluxe expanded' version of the album! The last six tracks are taken from Warwick Uni, March '81, the gig recorded for BBC Rock Goes to College, and will be familiar to most Banshees fans as it still pops up on late night tv on a regular basis. But these tracks dovetail, almost seamlessly, with the main body of the disc to provide an uninterrupted flow, although you do get Arabian Knights twice as a result. The Banshees would never be this good again. About a year after this, summer 1982, John McGeoch was fired due to some personal issues which had made him unreliable, and the group were never quite the same again, although they continued to make fine music throughout the remainder of their career. But this particular line-up, Banshees Mk2, had an air of exotic mystery and edgy experimental power that places them at the forefront of classic British art-rock, an irresistible mixture of intellect and instinct. For any even half-serious Banshees fan, this is essential stuff. As good as it gets. British rock at its finest.

Excellent Concert CD
I recently purchased the Siouxsie & The Banshees CD entitled "Transmission Impossible" which was recordings of 3 concerts where the sound quality was very poor. In contrast this CD is an excellent recording of the group live and is certainly going to get lots of plays. It captures the band at their peak. Highly recommended.

Superb live CD
SATB are my favourite band but that doesn't influence this review; if this recording was bad I'd say so. Fortunately it catches the band at their peak, with John McGeoch on guitar. The concert is part of the Ju-Ju album tour and I saw the band play live during this period. You can feel the atmosphere and excitement of the crowd, Siouxsie's voice sounds great and as a live act the Banshees rocked like demons despite some critics dismissing them as 'art school' lightweights. A cracking purchase.

Great.
Had a 'bootleg' of this album years ago, and I am so pleased it now comes in cd format. The quality is good, and the music is raw and punchy. A great album for old fans, they don't make bands like this anymore.

Best recorded testimony of Mc Geoch era Banshees
Don't expect the quality of the 1983 live album "Nocturne", however sound quality is much better than the live recording for German TV in Cologne from the same year. This double LP catapults you right back to the Summer 1981 tour if you were lucky to have witnessed this greatness. The rarely live recorded "Supernatural Thing" sounds fantastic. Extra feature is the 6 track bonus of the concert in Warwick 4 months earlier, way before the Banshees recorded their masterpiece "JuJu", where you hear a very early live version of "Monitor" weeks before it was recorded at Surrey Sound. You won't be disappointed!!!
