My 6 year old has had a tough year when it comes to writing and drawing. Over the last couple of weeks she has had a real passion for putting pen to paper and I thought this would be a fun way to keep her drawing and colouring. I had it delivered to her because what 6 year old doesn't like post! Unfortunately it arrived just before bedtime, but she bargained with us to try just o e picture and it was an instant hit. As soon as she woke up this morning she got her pens out and started again. She has completed 22 out of the 26 drawings in one day. She just kept going back to it because she could follow the easy instructions and the drawings she produced really looked like what they were supposed to be. If you have a child that needs some confidence regarding their ability with a pen then this is the book for you. It's fun, straight forward and engaging. I've just bought the number version and I will buy the third book as well when the second book is completed

When I was a kid I remember drawing a man's face from the letter S and thinking how cool that was. I went on to try other letters but wasn't too successful. So when I saw this book on Amazon I thought of my grandchildren, one of whom is 8 years old. She seems to be enjoying it a lot, but her older brother and sister are also enjoying it. I tried it myself and found that it was a lot of fun to be able to produce something that was quite close to the finished picture in the book. The illustrations are very simple and clear. Each character is represented by a letter of the alphabet. The characters are broken down into simple shapes so it is easy to follow. I was surprised and pleased by what my granddaughter was able to produce. Kids may like coloring and drawing, but can sometimes be easily discouraged because they can't figure out how to translate something onto paper. I think a book such as this is a good way to stimulate a child's imagination. After the drawing is done you can ask them to make their own stories using the drawing. The author, Rachel Goldstein refers to her website; Drawing How to Draw dot com which we also looked at. On the website there are hundreds of tutorials done using the same method as the book. She is obviously an accomplished artist, but doesn't boast about her accomplishments in the book. I like that. I'm so glad the author refers to this wonderful website. You can be sure that my grandchildren will be visiting it often. I am also looking forward to purchasing her next drawing book. This is really a wonderful book and a great buy. I highly recommend it. Note: I asked my grandchildren to do their drawings on a separate sheet of paper, even though the book has a place for each drawing. I plan on donating this book to our local library so other children can enjoy it. I will be ordering another copy.
