When it comes to learning how to draw in manga style, some books are better than others. This one's a goodie. There's a certain level of understanding expected in that your should already have a basic to low-intermediate grasp on figure drawing, but from there this books expands greatly on the subject. From muscles to extra fat, poses and props, this book will help you refine details for a character. It even has a decent section on clothing and hair that covers a variety of styles. Overall, a good resource for the beginner to take things to the next level.

There’s a plethora of ‘How to Draw Manga!’ Books on the market by, well people that don’t *actually* draw anything aside from those books for a living. TB Choi is an absolute powerhouse in art ranging from dynamic storyboards to intoxicating paintings. They hold an ever difficult balance between knowing how to add all the detail you want, while simplifying things to their most abstracted forms. Someone I wholeheartedly admire and hope to take away from in school. The book is backed by and covers important concepts like gesture, designing the figure from its most simple forms and understanding how to place it in perspective, but also touches on ideas that I haven’t had before in books like the variety of ways you can use line and shadow to enable different ways to draw, or just really honing in on how to design and make your characters and drawings expressive. I really cannot express enough how nice it is to have this. If I were to go back a couple years and start completely over with drawing, I would keep this as the one book on abstracted drawing and style while filling my library with the fundamentals.

As an intermediate artist, this book is a god send. Despite the kid-like, Chris Hart esque sounding title, it feels more catered towards people who are looking to develop a further understanding of the human figure and characters, instead of a "how to draw people 101" book. It doesn't feel like a proper art book in that you're studying diagrams of anatomy, but rather the field notes of an professional artist who has found multiple, useful ways to simplify and decipher the human body, which I think is really useful for someone like me who has studied anatomy, proportions, and more already. It has pages upon pages of simplified yet characteristic body shapes, muscle groups, expressions, and some other concepts I didn't even expect like a page on fat areas throughout the body (which is a topic I dont see mentioned in anatomy/figure books enough) and even an area on how to draw anthros. I think a beginner could still get something out of this, but it feels catered towards people who already have a bit of experience under their belt, and are looking for a nice step forward. Not to mention it's probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing art books I have now. It's just such a joy to see TBChoi's style and lines come to life as someone who really is a master of their craft.

I'm not a beginner artist and have been drawing for years but I'm always looking to learn more and see other artist's recommendations or advice to see where I could grow with my pieces. I saw this book in a store and fell in love with how this artist drew different body types and how they drew older faces. Their breakdown of anatomy with body positioning is amazing and easy to follow, and they break down the muscles of the body in a simplistic manner that makes it easier to remember important things to keep in mind while drawing. A huge bonus that I really loved as well that you don't see in a lot of manga/anime drawing books like this is the weight that comes with breasts on a human. Usually other books fail to show that gravity has a huge impact on how they lay and look but they do a pretty good job at explaining it and showing it. That may be a little too specific but its just something small that I appreciated a lot. My only issue with the book really just comes with the manga style, but a lot of the younger faces looked pretty much the same. Same nose, same big eyes. I liked the older faces specifically for the range of noses and facial details. It's also pretty small compared to a lot of other books I've gotten, but it does do a really good job at summarizing things to understand in a simple manner. Not a lot of text, but for visual learners its great. I'd mainly recommend this for good references to anatomy and face positioning. I recommend following their Instagram as well, I love their style.

I got this for my son (13), who's quite the artists himself. He's beginning to make webtoons and was struggling with a few aspects of the human form. So, I got this. It literally has everything, from top to bottom that you'd need to start drawing anime. Good for just about any level, really. I draw realism, semi professionally, and I still thought it was quite cool and wanted to read it for the info it shares. If you have an anime living little artist, or someone dreaming to learn to draw anime, just get it! :D

There isn't too much writing in this book, but the descriptions that are given to teach the art are effective. This book can be used for reference and for tips.

This book is perfect for aspiring artists who want to design anime characters. I bought it to improve my drawing skills and learn more about the character design process. Step-by-step lessons in anatomy, pose, expression, and costume make even very complex subjects seem approachable. I highly recommend it to anyone serious about mastering anime and manga artistry.

L'avantage d'une Coréenne qui parle anglais, c'est qu'elle va à l'essentiel, que ce n'est pas du Shakespeare et que, ouf, c'est compréhensible par un français (vous savez, un des ces peuples sur Terre qui n'est pas foutu de parler correctement sa propre langue) .. Le livre de TB Choi est un condensé de trucs et astuces qui vont vous faire passer des "levels" à des endroits où vous butez, ce n'est pas une méthode à proprement parler. Si vous cherchez une méthode de A à Z pour débuter par exemple, il faut chercher ailleurs. Je comprends que certains puissent être déçus mais il n'en reste pas moins que cela déborde de choses dont on doit s'inspirer si on veut progresser. Par contre, c'est beaucoup plus généraliste que le titrage "anime et manga" pourrait le laisser supposer, même si on peut considérer que le fond du sujet est bien le manga dans le style de TB Choi. Sans compter que quand on aime son trait, c'est un régal pour les yeux. Quant à lire dans les commentaires que l'on peut trouver facilement sur internet ce qu'il y a dans le bouquin, ça me hérisse. La version Kindle coûte une dizaine d'euros, c'est trop pour vous ? Je rappelle qu'un(e) artiste, comme tout le monde, doit payer son loyer, manger … alors faites un effort. D'autant qu'il y a également des tas de choses que TB Choi poste gracieusement sur internet et qui ne sont pas dans le livre.

Easy to follow and understand. The human figure is the hardest thing to draw but this book is helping somehow.

Ottimo manuale di anatomia e a mio parere il fatto che nel titolo ci sia scritto che è per imparare a disegnare Manga è un po' fuorviante. È a tutti gli effetti un ottimo manuale per imparare a disegnare il corpo umano, ricco di disegni esplicativi, semplici da comprendere anche per chi l'inglese non lo conosce. TB CHOI poi è una garanzia, capace di passare dallo stile realistico a quello più grafico e stilizzato del fumetto per poi arrivare alle deformazioni tipiche del Manga. Deformazioni che per riuscire a gestire bene senza doverle copiare necessitano di uno studio approfondito dell'anatomia classica. Sono un fumettista di professione nonchè insegnante presso una scuola di fumetto e l'ho voluto comprare perchè innanzi tutto TB CHOI è una grande professionista ma anche perchè le giovani generazioni di aspiranti fumettisti amano lo stile del manga, che a mia volta adoro riconoscendogli la capacità di far recitare i personaggi sopratutto con il corpo. Lo consiglio vivamente!
