A Great System when it wants to work
Where to start? I love my Win, but GOD if this thing doesn't have problems. It's a UMPC, an Ultra Mobile Personal Computer with a gamepad built right in. It's played most everything I've thrown at it with no problems: Grand Theft Auto IV, Skyrim, Remember Me, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Arkham Asylum, Far Cry 3, Bioshock, Dark Souls II, Overwatch... It's great for playing more Early 2000's-2013 games. Anything ridiculously new may have some trouble. It's also a great indie machine, as well as a phenomenal portable emulator. Being able to play Twilight Princess and Smash Bros. Melee never ceased to amaze me. It runs on the Intel Atom chip, the same chip the Microsoft Surface 3 runs on, and has one mono speaker. It has 64 GB internal storage, which, is barely enough for anything. So I bought a 128GB micro SD and the SAMSUNG 128GB Flash Drive Fit to expand my total storage up to roughly 320 GB. This was more than enough space for everything I wanted to play on it, so that was never an issue. Since I am pretty busy and find myself not at home as often anymore, my original intent for the GPD Win was to use it to clear out some of my games that had been sitting on my backlog for quite a while. Battery life is about 2-3 hours when doing some real heavy gaming, and 6 to 8 hours when doing lighter stuff, like indies or less intensive emulation. The device has a switch in the middle that allows you to use the gamepad as either a mouse, D-input controls, or Xbox 360 controls. It's not too uncomfortable to hold, the edges of the system can dig into your hands a little bit when playing for long periods of time and it can get a little hot, but not anything that absolutely put me off from the system. The community for this thing is great, there's a whole Subreddit devoted to this little guy. Everyone in there is super nice and really helpful when it comes to issues and troubleshooting your device. Now here's where it gets really irritating. The charging. This thing has the worst charging mechanics of anything I've ever seen. It somehow never knows how charged it really is, and has caused me a great deal of pain. If you charge the system while on, it can sometimes fall into a deep sleep and not stop itself on the charger. This means the device will become overcharged, go over 100%, and not turn on. The first time this happened, I had to spend $60 to send it back to GPD, where, in the time that it took to get there (about 3 weeks), it had completely discharged and there was no longer a problem. After getting it back, it works great. They were kind enough to update it for me, and try to do what they can to prevent it from falling into a deep sleep again. I went into the settings and made sure to turn off any instance of "Sleep" in the power settings. About a month later, I set it on the charge and had it download and install games from steam over night. I wake up the next morning and amazingly, somehow, even though I never told it to sleep, it has fallen asleep and become overcharged again. I've gone through the process of completely draining the battery, charging it again, and still nothing. I've waited about a week and tried to turn it on again, still nothing. I'm still currently dealing with this issue, and the only solution I can think of right now outside of shipping it back to GPD AGAIN is to stick it in a box somewhere and forget about it for about 3 weeks to see if it turns on again by itself.Would I recommend this product? Cautiously.I spent 350 dollars on this thing, and when it works, it's great. But it has NOT worked more out of the total time I've owned it. I've owned it since February. Since then, I've spent about maybe a month or maybe 3 weeks being able to use it, and the rest of the time has been spent troubleshooting, or waiting for it to come back from GPD support. My patience are truly being tested by this device, and I'm so conflicted, because I LOVE it when it works. But if I ever get it back on again, I'll probably just sell it to try and make back the money I spent on it.PROS:+Great Community+Plays TONS of PC GamesCONS-Way too many issues for its price-Any issues you have require you to ship it back to China which costs $60 shipping each tripBottom Line: If you're deadset on owning one of these, go ahead. Just be aware of the problems you may get with your system. In any system release, there's always a number of people who are going to get a bad system, but the numbers of faulty systems on this seem unusually high. If you can wait, maybe look into other systems releasing later this year, like the Smach Z or the Pyra.
