Install, set up, then forget it
I have two Echo Dots. For about two years, I used my first Echo Dot, “Alexa”, as little more than an alarm clock, timer, music player, etc. After buying my second Dot, “Ziggy”, I started setting up routines, and decided to set up a way to automatically turn my living room lamps on and off. For that, I needed an Alexa-enabled smart device, and bought the Amazon Basics smart in-wall outlet to control the lamps through Alexa. The installation instructions were clear, and the only ”difficult” part was stuffing the new switch and wiring into the shallow outlet box in my older home. You will be hard-wiring the smart outlet. Figuring out how to set everything up with the Alexa app CAN be relatively easy at times, but using the app is NOT intuitive. For starters, you’ll use the app to set everything up. In my case, I customized the names for each lamp and assigned them to the “living room”. That lets me control each lamp by itself, or both at once. Over time, I recommend you take time to explore the app to see the kinds of things Alexa can do for you. I’ve been using the smart outlet for about 6 months now. From the very first day, the outlet has never given me any trouble. While I sometimes have to reset my Dots, on the other hand, once installed, I NEVER thought about the outlet again until I changed my Internet provider two weeks ago and had to change the WiFi setup for the smart outlet. Bottom line: The smart outlet was inexpensive, easy to install and set up. It has never had any connectivity issues. The outlet instantly responds to voice commands. I can recommend this outlet without hesitation.

Best smart outlet
After having been through several smart wall outlets, this was by far the easiest to set up in the easiest to use!!!

Good smart outlet.
I've used one for a few years and it works great for managing lights with automation or Alexa. Fit in my existing socket and connected with a QR code to my WiFi and I haven't touched it since.

Mixed bag
The Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet is marketed as an easy-to-install and affordable smart home solution. While it does have some positive features, there are also several drawbacks that may make it a less than ideal choice for some consumers. One of the positive features of the Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet is its affordability. Compared to other smart outlets on the market, this product is relatively inexpensive, making it an attractive option for consumers on a budget. Additionally, the installation process is straightforward, and the outlet can be controlled using a smartphone app or voice commands. However, there are also several drawbacks to the Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet. One of the main issues is its reliability. Some consumers have reported that the outlet may disconnect from the Wi-Fi network or fail to respond to commands, making it unreliable for use. Additionally, some consumers have had issues with the outlet's compatibility with certain smart home systems, such as Apple HomeKit. Another issue with the Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet is its design. While it is designed to fit into a standard wall outlet, some consumers have reported that the outlet's size can make it difficult to install in certain spaces, such as cramped electrical boxes. Additionally, the outlet's bulky design may make it difficult to use other outlets in the same location. Finally, some consumers have expressed concerns about the security of the Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet. While the outlet does have some basic security features, such as encryption, some consumers have reported that they are uncomfortable with the idea of a smart outlet being connected to the internet and potentially vulnerable to hacking or other security threats. Overall, the Amazon Basics Smart In-Wall Outlet has some positive features, such as its affordability and ease of installation. However, its reliability, design, and security features may make it a less than ideal choice for some consumers. Before purchasing this product, it is important to carefully consider your smart home needs and preferences, as well as any potential security concerns.

Integrates seamlessly with Alexa and both outlets can be named and controlled individually. Perfect.
Exactly what we needed: a smart outlet that had the ability to individually name and control each of the two outlets separately. How we use it: Our home has an extensive Lutron automation system which is fabulous. And a great feature is that it integrates with Alexa to bring voice control to our whole home. However, Lutron does not make a controllable duplex outlet - go figure / makes no sense. That's where these outlets come in a fill the gap. While we cannot control them with the Lutron system, since we now do everything via Alexa voice control (or pre-programmed Routines), these integrated easily with routines and schedules appropriate for our use. We have three of them controlling mood lights, display lights, and holiday lights (including the Christmas tree during season). If you wonder, these are identical to the ones sold at Home Depot with the following exception. If you use the app that comes with the HD ones, you can control them individually. But if you integrate them with Alexa, the duplex is controlled as one, not individually. Since Alexa control was key to how we "speak to our house", the HD ones had to go back and these from Amazon replaced them, working perfectly. Highly Recommended

Each of the two outlets are independently controllable
Super easy setup. Alexa app already alerted me to the new device once I turned on the power. No need to scan the QR code if you purchase the smart outlet on the same account as your Alexa devices. Each of the two outlets are independently controllable just like having two separate smart plugs. There are two push buttons between the outlets to manually activate or deactivate each outlet if needed.

Don’t buy if you want a timed routine
If you’re looking for something to activate on-demand, perhaps this is your item. If you need something that will work on a routine, not so much. In my case I need this to control outside lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. Seems simple enough until you try to set it up in the Alexa app. So far, my experience in a week of screwing around with the app has been everything from not coming on at all, coming on but shutting off a few hours later to coming on and not shutting off at all until I manually shut it off well into the daylight hours. The app does little to inform you of the current operating routine, other than yo inform you that a routine is active (doesn’t tell you what the routine is) and that the light is either on or off, or that it has lost communication (seems to have no problem regaining communication when I send an on or off command). Calls to Amazon customer service have thus far gone unreturned. Unfortunately, this is exactly what I expected from Amazon. The product this is replacing, made by Belkin, worked great for several years until that company decided to no longer sell smart plugs or support their products, rendering their products obsolete and unusable. Apparently now I’m stuck having to buy and return products from a few manufacturers before finding one that functions properly again

Great replacement!
I use this to power my landscape lighting transformer. Previous to this I used a smartplug to run the scheduled on-off. The existing outlet on my small entryway didn't have a rain enclosure and by using a smartplug there wasn't enough room install one. While rain hasn't caused an issue yet, I was always concerned. Sometimes the rain would blow into the entryway. This resolved that issue by being able to remove the smartplug and installing this in-wall outlet. Installation was easy (just make sure you flip the circuit breaker) and I used the ENERLITES Extra-Duty Weatherproof Enclosure, also from Amazon, to protect if from the rain. The plug connected instantly to the Amazon app and my wi-fi, and hasn't had any connection issues even though it's outside and essentially encased in the brick wall of my home. I changed my routine to use this outlet and everything works as I hoped for. It's now been raining for several days and no problems. Very pleased.
