Surge is kinda like a futuristic bloodborne
Futuristic bloodborne is great so far. I am just past the first boss. The first boss makes both Index Gundr, and the Cleric Beast seem easy. The key is patience, then no problem. There are connecting pathways just like bloodborne. You can move extremely fast as well. Some weapons provide the ability to do backflips and swing quickly. There are heavy set weapons and gear. The enemies are somewhat challenging. Graphics look awesome and the sounds are decent. The safe area has some old country music, lol. You can turn off or lower the finishing moves if you want. The finishing moves can have a lot of blood and detail. The main character doesn't have initial customization, but with the armor sets looking the way they do, I don't mind at all. The healing items have a variety of uses, and the armor is upgradable. There is meaningful slaying of enemies to target what piece of armor or weapon that you want. You can store experience points for upgrades and crafting. The gear sets are actually meaningful, so you need to choose what you want. Feel free to swap out often if you want to try stuff out. It's not just for looks, which is great. You can rescue NPC's for rewards and to talk to. The transportation system was used on a train so far. There are elevators as well, to unlock new areas and pathways. The best thing about The Surge to me, is how fast you can move. No more slow motion Dark souls.. It's also faster than bloodborne. You can sprint and jump extremely quickly. Many moves can be combined with these actions as well. On a side note. If you are tired of lovecraftian and medieval, then jump aboard. I don't think there is any multiplayer, but I enjoy single player personally. Some co-op would be cool, I guess. You can skip scenes if you want just hold the button down as needed. You can farm areas, gear, weapons, and items. Some items can be swapped out outside of the safe zone, but some cannot be. Don't worry about the dark areas, as you do get a light. The ranged attacks consists of drones which are awesome. Your gear will change how the drones are used. The weapons look incredible when compared to something like a sword, axe or club. Think whirlgig, or big electric chainsaws. This is an industrial, futuristic, apocalyptic, fast combat robotic game, so expect the game to reflect that. Update: The Surge has plenty of replay value. Next game+ is pretty fun! I am on the NG+ third boss area, and there are some newly placed enemies that can 2 shot you, if you are not careful. New environmental factors as well. Each boss has a secret weapon to receive upon meeting certain requirements. There are plenty of upgrade materials in NG+, allowing you to experiment plenty. You keep everything, but the gold coins pretty much. You will receive all of your previous drones when you get the first drone in NG+. Nano cores are different for NG+ upgrades as well, so no need to horde them. So many play styles to choose from.

Completed the game: My Review
Deck 13, the developers behind the Surge, is the team behind Lords of The Fallen. In case you haven’t played that game, it was yet another souls-like fantasy action rpg that wasn’t without its flaws. It was known to have slow, unresponsive combat, uninspired environments and a short run time. The Surge, in many ways, is a huge improvement on what I have seen with Lords of the Fallen, even if it may not be up to snuff with the average Souls game. Gameplay: The gameplay is very responsive in the Surge (unlike LOTF), and it has your typical Dark Souls controls. You run, jump and swing away at your opponents with heavy and light attacks all while dodging theirs. I didn’t notice the game having invisibility frames (being invulnerable to damage when dodging at the proper time) when you roll, which caused me to take damage a lot more than I would have liked. One thing the Surge does differently than the average souls game is that it allows you to target specific body parts on enemies in order to build up your energy meter and perform ‘finishing blows’. These attacks sever body parts and allow you to harvest those parts to build the equivalent armor to install on your character. When you defeat enemies you collect tech scrap (ie: souls) to use for character leveling. The only consumable items exist as mere tech scrap boosts, and don’t provide you with any health, speed, or buff-like benefits. The game is separated into zones, which act as large, and often-times confusing areas consisting of winding corridors, skinny stairwells and exo-lifts (robot elevators) by means to get around. The game doesn’t have checkpoints, necessarily, but rather shortcuts that you will unlock as you progress in each zone, which always lead back to the nearest safe room. Each zone’s safe room provides you with a med bay to level up your character and apply ‘implants’ which act as your main source of passive skills and health injectors(is: estes flasks). There is also a machine that acts as a crafting station to upgrade and craft your equipment. Graphics: Here is where the surge shines. Unlike Lords of The Fallen or even with the Souls series, this game runs incredibly. On PS4 Pro, you have two graphics options: ‘Quality’ and ‘Framerate’. Quality allows you to increase the resolution to a custom, dynamic 1600p with a solid 30 frames per second. ‘Framerate’ locks the frame rate at 60 with a native 1080p. Xbox one runs at 900p 30fps and base PS4 runs at 1080p 30. It’s rare to find dips in frame rate on any platform and it’s also worth mentioning the controller response is near perfect. Deck 13 decided to opt for a custom engine and it really shows here. The lighting, shadows and texture work is all excellent. Most of the lighting in the Surge is static, but even the light casted off your mech suit is usually a sight to behold. It’s pretty safe to say this is a very gorgeous game. Problems: One of the biggest issues I had involved the enemy balancing. It seemed like no matter how much time I put into leveling up my character, applying implants and upgrading gear, I always ran into something that could kill me in one or two hits. That kind of treatment happens a lot in the soul’s series, but when it does, there is usually either a way around the problem or another path you could take where you could level up and return later. The Surge is incredibly linear, and more often than not, you’ll find yourself back against a wall with an enemy you have little chance of killing unless you get lucky. It’s more forgivable when bosses kill you in a couple hits, but even at least 2 of the games bosses just feel cheap. The bottom line is that enemy attack power doesn’t seem to properly scale to player defense and you will feel powerless through a good portion of the game. The second problem relates to the zone progression. Exploration isn’t as open as it is in other action games. In the Surge, you are often running through corridors, factories or maintenance shafts and it’s incredibly easy to get lost. You will run into more locked doors than you can remember and when you eventually come across a circuit to overload (ie: a door switch), you will now have the fun to task say to yourself: “hmm, out of the 6 doors I ran by in the last 30 minutes of gameplay, I wonder which one this switch opened”…not fun. Overall Value/Replay I died quite a bit in the surge. I also went out of my way to find many hidden items. I made it my goal to explore as much as I could, if not everything, even if it meant I had to run for my life a few times. I completed the game at just over the 25 hour mark at core level 71. Your mileage may vary, but with patience, there is much fun to be had with this game if you can look past the problems. One last thing to mention is that there is a New Game Plus which allows you to keep your gear and level and start over whilst experiencing some “new challenges”. As much as I enjoyed my single play through, I can’t say I would want to play this game again. At over 20 hours, I feel like the game did what it was supposed to do…..it made me try and try again until I finished it, and I enjoyed every hour….well, except for the few times when I got lost:]
