Better Homes & Gardens celebrates its 100th anniversary with this expanded edition of the “red plaid” cookbook, a trusted staple in kitchens across America since 1930. All-new chapters look back at the history of Better Homes & Gardens, including a "Behind the Kitchen Door" feature about America's first test kitchen, and a "Then & Now" section comparing original classics to updated recipes influenced by flavor and current food trends. With more than 1,000 recipes and a photo for each one, the book covers traditional dishes such as Brownies and new favorites like Cold Brew Coffee. This edition maintains fresh organization to reflect how we cook today: recipes have flavor variations, options to swap out ingredients, and ways to make dishes healthier. Clear directions and how-to photos teach techniques; identification photos clarify the broad range of today's ingredients; charts for meat and poultry give at-a-glance cooking times; and "cheat sheets" throughout present information in easy-to-access bites. Perfect for today’s kitchens, the book is a handy, lay-flat hardcover. Review: Great Cookbook for Beginners - I bought this as a gift for my daughter-in-law, and it was the perfect choice! This cookbook truly is the gold standard for teaching inexperienced home cooks the essential basic techniques, while also helping more seasoned cooks level up their skills and confidence in the kitchen. The explanations are clear, practical, and thorough—covering everything from foundational skills to elevating everyday meals. She’s already raving about how much she's learning and how approachable the recipes feel. Highly recommend for anyone looking to build (or refine) their cooking foundation—it's a game-changer! Review: Always love these cook books - As always, the better homes and gardens cook book is wonderful. We buy these every few years and like to pick up the vintage ones when we see the. The pages are always beautiful, thick, and glossy. The glossy is an upside because I sometimes get a bit of food on them, and they wipe clean easy enough. The recipes in them are also tasty. They are easy to adjust if needed. Pretty comprehensive selection

Yummy recipes
This cookbook is fantastic. So many true to recipe photos and tips and illustrations for the new and experienced cook. I got hungry just reading through the recipes. Recipes are mix of traditional and new with current ingredients, supplies and equipment.

Mixed feelings
I just received my copy today, and so far, I have mixed feelings. I got this to supplement my older (11th) edition. I'm happy my older edition is still ok for now, because I can see some recipes were taken out to make room for the new ones. (As is often the case when there are new editions.) Pros, to me: it has newer, updated recipes that reflect more diverse flavors we enjoy (think Chai or kombucha as well as old favorites like lasagna). I like that there is a section just on charts you could use for cooking. I really like the "Then and Now" section. It does still cover basic things for those new to the kitchen. Some cons for me: I'm not fond of the magazine-like layout on most pages. I find it a bit distracting. I also don't quite like that the "Then & Now" section is BEFORE the Table of Contents; it makes it hard to find the Contents. And I'm not positive yet that I like the change in some of the categories for the Table of Contents. I look forward to trying several recipes, I found some I already think look appealing. That being said, I think if you're looking for a BHG cookbook to replace an older edition you really liked, I would hesitate to suggest this particular edition. It doesn't seem to have a many of the older "favorites" you may be looking for. My take on the paper quality mentioned in many reviews: I DO agree the paper quality is not the same as in my other copy, or in other cookbooks I have. It does feel like a cheaper quality, though I think you will be fine if you're reasonably careful. When I read reviews on different cookbooks, I noted photos seem to be an important factor for many people. I guess because my other edition doesn't have as many, I got used to it. But this edition has A LOT of photos. Update: I made the Chicken Schwarma two nights ago, following the pressure cooker directions (the recipe gives directions for slow or pressure cooker options). It was very good, I will definitely make it again. And I did accidentally splash water drops on the page in spots. It does make the page curl a little.

An amazing purchase!
This is one of the greatest cook books ever made. It's been around for one hundred years. I have a small library of cook books and recipe books and the this one is with my favorites on the easiest to access shelf.

This is THE book on North American cooking
We grew up in Spain and knew nothing about North American (USA + Canada) cuisine; this book changed everything. It is very well organized, complete and well explained. All recipes are simple and effective, results are guaranteed even if you're not that good in the kitchen. When each of our three kids moved out, they got a copy of the latest edition - along with another book on Spanish cooking, of course :)

Brilliant...perfect balance if old and new
I bought this for my mum. It is brilliant! It is a perfect balance of the old and the new! I loved how it had pics and photos of the first editions throughout it. The pages are more magazine like in texture and thinness, but in a way it actually suits it. It is always so good to have a cookbook that you know that whatever receou you try it will work!
