Keeps My DLink NAS Cool & Quiet
I bought this great little fan to help keep my NAS cool and quiet. I have owned a DLINK DNS 323 for a little over a couple of years. I am running a RAID set up with two WD Green 1TB drives. I have ripped a ton of movies from my DVD collection and I store the files on one drive and backup to the other. So far, the unit and the drives (all of which I bought through Amazon) have operated well but the DNS does have a fan that can be a bit too audible at times. Every so often I use the web utility to check on the operating temperature on warm days (without central air going in the house). In these conditions, the unit's operating temperature tends to get a little high. This, of course, triggers the unit's fan to cool the drives and the internal operating environment of the NAS. The problem is that even with the internal fan, the unit still runs a bit warm on hot days. So not only am I having to deal with an increased noise floor in the office on hot days but the unit is not getting cooled enough for my liking. Enter the Thermaltake fan. I just unpack the fan and the telescoping USB cable, connect one end of the telescoping USB cable to the fan and the other into the NAS's USB port on the rear, extend the telescoping cable long enough so that the fan sets directly in front of the faceplate and....INSTANT COOLING! On mild days, the Thermaltake keeps my NAS at a consistent 84 degrees Fahrenheit. This happens at the lowest setting and the NAS' fan never kicks in! NO NOISE AND COOL RUNNINGS! If I crank it to the highest setting, the temperature drops as much as another 10-15 more degrees! On warmer days I just push the fan speed up and the temp remains consistently under 90 degree mark, usually at around 88-89 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course at the highest setting, the fan is very audible and the noise cancelling issue becomes moot. Still, in most cases, this thing does exactly what I was hoping it would do. I highly recommend this cheap, handy little fan.

Would have given 4 1/2 star... ONE issue (read very bottom...)
I don't usually give reviews - especially on stuff that has a TON of reviews. I don't think my review will make a difference. But, since I have no life and I really like this product, I will gladly give a review...This is the longest review in history for something so simple.. read at your own risk. Basically Thermaltake RULES - Been using one of them for over a week and had my replacement unit since Saturday (4 days ago). No, I did NOT do a temperature reading before or after reading. I completely forgot. However, I can tell you this - the laptop used to heat up within 15 minutes of startup - enough to notice it affecting performance. When running my 2 editing programs it would literally get hot enough after about 30 minutes to where I could NOT hold my hat on the hot spot on the bottom of my laptop for any longer than about 8 seconds. Until, finally it shut down due to it over heating. (explained below) That being said - read several issues below and a single CON NOT having to do with its performance, but, with its condition upon arrival. And another CON just to be nit-picky. *I pre-apologize for my typing errors and grammatical gnarlyness* I simply don't care as it's too long to go thru and fix.* First off - I am a photographer, I use alot of editing programs. I have a fairly high powered laptop - keep nasty comments to yourself please.. I have dual quad processors on an HP Pavilion dv7-CTO6700 Entertainment PC. The heat is NOT entertaining. It gets hot enough to warrant a removal from my lap. Thus, changing the name simply to 'top' or if I need my 27" monitors, a 'tabletop'... :) My biggest heat problem comes when im running Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 and maybe 3 other applications, and standard processes running in background, about 70 - 85. I usually keep everything to a minimum. Oh, Pandora is usually running too. The editing programs are really system taxing, even with MY system optimized to run these programs. Not 'thinking' I made my first Targus 'mistake' when I purchased a fabric, gel filled laptop 'cooling' pad. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. All it does is PREVENT airflow to your system. Think about the logic.. are you going to do better raising your laptop up on a couple books? OR using a fabric pad flush up against your air vents? So, after that fiasco, I bought a Targus for two ten dollar bills from Coxtxx.. (sells at twice as much at the office box stores...) it's AWFUL. No cooling at all when fans are on. Has two fans that you can not adjust speed on and to can only draw air from the sides of the cooler as it is solid plastic on the bottom. So, essentially, it was just sucking in hot air and moving it around. It was JUST as hot using it - as it was drawing power from my system as it was USB powered. Also, that particular Targus is 100% plastic - so I should have known plastic wouldn't have dissipated heat at all. So, final straw - My computer was sitting on the bed with NOTHING running just the basic start up programs - shut off in less than 10 minutes. Uh, that's NOT good.. (this was after using a can of air to blow out some lint that had accumulated in the vents. But NOTHING that would warrant a shut off. So, that is when I started the obsessive hunt for 'GOOD LAPTOP COOLERS'. I was smart and went to gaming websites / forums.. and went to laptop overclocker forums/websites to search for product laptop cooler product reviews. These guys/gals are NO JOKE. Overclocking is (in non technical terms) is when people run their machines to the maxximum and get more power out of stuff than what the manufacturer intends. So, yeah, more power produces more heat. If you want a better explanation please go google it. Basically, all you need to know is that these people (techie smarty pants) including being smart they are passionate and take their gaming seriously and take their systems seriously. And don't want to overheat in the middle of a game (or programming). So, finally I used my friggen brain after 40$ wasted dollars.. And a year and 1/2 of dealing with too much heat inching my brand new laptop closer to death and closer to my purchasing an Alienware machine. So, I think investing in a couple Thermaltakes or a Cooler Master Notepal U3 is smart and will def. extend your computers hardware. So, that brought me to buy THERMALTAKE AF0007 fans.. ALOT of these folks recommended these AND alot of them recommended the Cooler Master Notepal U3 (for use with up to 18" laptops, mine is a 17.3). So, in a frustrated whirlwind of amazon purchasing, I bought 2 of these fans and a Cooler Master Notepal U3 latoptop cooler. The Cooler Master is aweeeeeesome with 3 moveable fans in whatever configuration you need. AND bought these two Thermaltake fans, my laptop doesn't even get WARM.. it is literally COOL to the touch and the little fans on full power make me cold enough to where I have to put on a sweater. (not kidding) It's about 70 out during the day. (no, not hot) but enough cooling power from these little fans for a sweater, esp. at night?! Agreed, its a bit over kill. Im certain either 2 maybe 1 of these fans would be sufficient - but with the Cooler Master U3 - you better buy a sweater too... A couple tips/hints: If you are low on usb ports, you should get a USB port HUB with multiple ports. Since yes, the only option to power this is with USB - so why not get one with power adapter so that you can just plug it into the wall. OR if you don't have an electrical outlet, you CAN use USB. It does include the ac adaptor and the usb cord. Tip #2 You should raise your laptop up to get the air flowing under it. just blowing a fan onto a laptop that is flat on the bed or table isn't going to cool your laptop nor circulate air under it. I recommend raising it up minimum 2". and move your Thermaltake accordingly. My only 'want' with this product is an OFF/ON switch... there is a turn dial for low to high and everything in between fan power, but no OFF/ON. Just unplug it from the usb power source. (i recommend getting the Plugable USB 2.0 10 Port Hub with Power Adapter) You plug this into the wall and plug your fan/fans into this and it doesnt tax your system - all the power comes from your wall outlet not from your laptop. (OR you can use the option to use the included USB cord to power it if you don't have access to an electrical outlet) this thing is NICE and SUPER CHEAP. *********** for those of you here for JUST the problem*************** I bought 2, BUT one of them had a problem at the connector, coming from the black 'retracible wire part' was hanging out and the copper, white, and blue wires it was connected to were frayed and some weren't connected any longer. ************something GOOD from the problem though************** The good part is this - and I think this is NEW is overnight returns on defective products!!! If you get a damaged or defective item, they ship it out next day! Not business day - but next DAY! (except Sundays) I've not had to return anything defective / damaged for over a year. So, i know its been less than a year this whole next day returns thingie has been initiated. I went thru my amazon account, returned the defective product and OVERNIGHT ON DELIVERED ON SATURDAY was my replacement air conditioner!! (my fan) So , that is why it still got 5 stars even though I got a defective product. It was THANKSGIVING weekend and it was here less than 15 hours after I reported the defective unit. Remember, raise UP your computer a minimum of 2" so you can get that air flowing or these would be pointless in purchasing. ******^^^^^^^ got the replacement and it was perfectly fine - It's now Jan 7th - and they both run great. BUT the Coolermaster Notepal U3 that I bought failed... the cord has to be jiggled for it to give power to the fans... I baby my stuff so it makes NO sense to me why it failed in 2 months. ******^^^^^^^

Arrived just one day after the placement of the order. Worked exactly as supposed, effectively preventing my Surface Pro 3 i5 from throttling while playing some high-end computer games. Though, one thing worth mentioning: when the fan is on its full power, the rotating sound of the fan is actually a little noisy. Yet it perhaps isn't that bad since the games themselves produce loud noises largely overwhelming that of the fan. A good item after all. Should be esp. on the list-of-considerations for anyone who is struggling with their auto-throttling Surface Pro 3 i5/i7. EDIT: Yes, it does stop Surface Pro 3 i5/i7 from throttling, but then it is NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE CPU TEMPERATURE FROM RISING TO 85~89 C when playing high-end games, which is surely gonna reduce the life of the components, e.g. CPU and mainboard. If you want to both stop throttling and prevent overheating, then this one is not the all-pro master you (and I) are looking for. I'm also looking out for better products.(Not saying this is not a good product, but just that it cannot satisfy a hard one as aforementioned.)

This was my requirement : Have a entertainment cabinet. XBOX, Sony Home Theatre, APC UPS, Set Top Box, Multi socket spike guard. All these generate atleast 5-6 degrees more heat than ambient temperature. Had to get a solution to keep the cabinet at ambient temperature and with least possible investment and modifications. Should not be noisy, should have least footprint, easy to adjust orientation and possibility to shift and fix at acceptable variable distance from central console. Solution: I had to cut two holes on either corners (extreme left and extreme right on the floor) of the cabinet. I did not have many USB solutions with the products mentioned above, but somehow managed to get the wall socket to USB connector of my old mobile added to the spike guard and used it to connect this product. Since this product has the possibility to vary speed using controller that is fixed on it, this product is an gift sent from heaven. Within few minutes, I was able to keep it in location of my choice and set speed that was relevant to heat and devices that were turned on. So, if I had to push my XBOX on, needed more heat to be pushed out of the cabinet. So, variable speed control came handy. People who need cheap, good build quality, ease of deployment and flexibility should go for this.

Bought this to cool my Denon amplifier. This is the only one I could find that had a usb connection. Postage seemed a bit high, +£13, but it was the only one. Delivered within a few days and I noted it had come from US! You can use it, as intended, by standing it upright. However, I needed it to lie face down to blow air into the top of the amp. First I stuck one of those floor protectors that you stick to the bottom of chair legs, to the face, this acts as a cushion and ensures quiet running. There is a speed adjustment knob, I turn it to minimum, plugged it into my nearby desktop, laid it face down at the front of the amp and hey presto it works. Its almost completely silent. There is no vibration whatsoever, so no movement. Even on slow speed it works fine and keeps my amp very cool. Yes I paid about £30, but I consider this an absolute bargain. I will buy another for my Onkyo NR609 and this really needs to be cooled! Great product. Oh, nearly forgot the usb cable spool is about 4 feet long and comes on a neat little reel which you can pull out very easiy. The cable, if you can call it that, is ribbon like. Perfect design. Fabulous!

Really pleased with this fan. I have attached it to the inside grill area of the door to my apartment's structured wiring cabinet, which contains my cable modem, wireless router and voip adapter. Lots of heat in this small congested cabinet. The fan exhausts the hot air, and with the variable speed control, I can keep the noise level virtually silent. The fan draws power from a USB port on my router, and I can adjust the cable length to permit the door to swing open without yanking out the cable. Just a perfect solution to my problem.
