The listing says it is 4th edition, but the picture is of the 5th edition. Which is it?

So i have the original game. i want to play cities and knights. can i buy the expansion without the 5-6 expansion?

yes, that is only if you want to play 5 to 6 players. If you have catan, you can buy cities and knights 3-4 expansion to play with 3 to 4 people.

Is this compatible with basic catan 5th edition? or is there basic catan: cities & knights for 4 player version?

You have to have the Catan basic and the Catan basic Extension for 5-6 players PLUS Cities and Knights EXPANSION and the 5-6 player EXTENSION. If you go to the Catan website they have a flow chart, I believe. For every Expansion, you need the base game and for every extension you need the base extension plus the expansion. There are some stand alone games, but they are usually only 3-4 player and have no extensions, like Star Trek Catan. Hope that helps.
