An Editors Memo
As a professional film/tv editor this book has helped refine my methods because workflow is something that evolves with time and experience. Even though it’s not necessarily a book on how to edit but there’s nuggets that will help you if you’re just starting out or even when you’re a seasoned editor. Highly recommend.

This Book Belongs By Your Bed, And In Your Editing Bay
I learned about this book from Zach Arnold. He interviewed Steven Hullfish, and I immediately ordered this book. Since then it is one of three books I keep by my bed at night. As a video editor, I am always looking for a way to improve my skill. I have always believed that if you want success with anything, you must find someone who already has what you are striving for, then model them.Steven gives us EVERYONE. From organization, creativity, storytelling, pacing, music, and much more; Steven has provided us aspiring video editors a one stop shop for all video editing knowledge. He puts you into the cutting room with the most world renown editors, and allows you to have a conversation with them. Any question you would ask an Oscar winning editor, Steven asks. What makes them successful, and how do you achieve it. You gain tactics and strategies that help you in any form of editing you are involved with. The treasures contained in this book would take a lifetime to gather. Steven has shared this with us. This is an amazing book. I would say that this book is essential to your growth as a video editor. I am so glad I learned of this.I read this book almost everyday, trying to really get the sense of what those award winning editors do everyday. Words cannot express how great this book is. Every project I edit from here on out, is a reflection of the information contained. Don't forget the additional interviews and articles on the website as well. Cut.

An amalgam of voices give you a rare opportunity to learn the craft from the very best today
If you have read Steve's interviews at ProVideo Coalition you know this book has a lot to offer. To every lover of the film editing craft, this book will inspire you and leave you with priceless knowledge that you will actually use on the editing room on day to day situations. It has a great arrangement of multiple point of views from the very best of the industry today. Which is a valuable thing if you consider that assistants are not learning that much on their jobs directly from editors. It’s like having the chance to learn and listen from all of them while catching the similarities and differences between their approaches to the job. It will increase your confidence to make your own decisions and make great ones. You can see the love Steve H. has for the craft, how he scrutinize and elicit from editors the cream of the crop, not by only asking the right questions, but also because he is trying to absorb as much as possible from such great talents. I mean, there is a lot people out there making interviews, but you end up getting disappointed… and when you have experience, you want something more, and Steve does that from time to time.If you love this craft, you will be hooked since the beginning and I almost crumble (literally) when he was talking about the mission of this book, the sacrifices and other thoughts on the introduction… along with a reminiscence to Lupita Nyongo’s speech at the oscars. I mean, you will feel the passion and dedication, and be grateful for it.

Treasure trove of advice!
I’ve been editing for over 15 years and continually refer back to this book that is loaded with good advice and practices within the field of film editing. I appreciate the detailed answers shared by the editors. I’ve purchased several copies for fellow editors. This isn’t a book about how to learn the basics of NLE systems, but as the book title indicates, the art and practical side to being an editor. The book I own is littered with dog earmarks. Thank you Steve for taking the time to collect these conversations and putting this book in our world to consume!Whether you’re new to editing or a seasoned professional, this book belongs not on your bookshelf, but at your workstation for quick reference! A must have!

The distilled knowledge of the collective genius of the who's who in feature and TV editing
I rented this book fully prepared to move on after I had read and taken on board a few lessons here and there. This was primarily to help me along on my journey to become a credible editor and understand the minds of the top tiers of the profession. It took one chapter to realize that I did not want to give the book back and immediately purchased, every page reveals the inner workings of the edit. I don't just recommend this book, it is a necessity for anyone that wants to sit in front of a screen and go from being a technician to an artist.I have not even finished the book yet and I have started re-reading chapters. Astonishing work and even more astonishing the body of work and span of time that is represented by these artists. If you aspire to any level of creative editing you owe it to yourself to get this book today. You never know it may be your name there by the time volume 2 is on the stands.Thank you Steve Hullfish what an epic task you set yourself and executed flawlessly.

Words of wisdom from the best of the best
Reading this book is like getting mentored by the top editors in the field all at once, only their most essential advice has been carefully selected, catalogued, and organized. Editing is where that "movie magic" truly occurs, so whether you're an editor, filmmaker, or anyone looking to gain a greater understanding of what it takes to make a film or television show, this is a must read.Hullfish is able to extract expert insight from an impressive list of editors who would never find the time to share it otherwise. The industry is constantly evolving, but I expect this book to remain relevant for decades to come. Plus, if you want to hear from the editors of some of the top films of today, practically in real time as they're being released, check out Hullfish's podcast by the same name. The priceless knowledge he continues to present is never ending! And we should all be grateful. Film history this deep can't be found anywhere else.
