How secure is the pencil in the charging position at the spine? And does it charge properly in this position?

The pencil holder on the spine works very well for charging as well as holding the pencil securely. I don’t store my pencil there if I travel with it however. There is the risk that if it gets bumped just right on the end of the pencil it could pop off. There is an elastic sleeve on the back that holds the pencil more securely. I have had no issues with the pencil moving in the sleeve. There are no issues with the Apple Pencil 2 charging when it is in the proper position in the pencil holder on the spine.

Can the case fold flat with access to the screen? Will need to mount occasionally, some cases make this hard.

Yes this case will fold flat. The top cover is very thin. Also note that it's magnetic so can hang on a metallic surface. I use the Zugu cases exclusively. Have regular iPad, new iPad Air, iPad Mini, my husband's iPad and Mini and all use the Zugu case. If I could get one for my iPhone I would. Excellent protection!
