From the genius of Taylor Sheridan
What stupendous bit of storytelling. Not too dissimilar from the great Lonesome Dove series, Sheridan, who by the way, is the co-creator and writer for the Yellowstone tv series invents a historical byline as a prequel giving a new and gritty look at how the Dutton ranch came to be. The story follows John Dutton's great-grandfather as he leads his family and a large group of immigrants out of Fort Worth, Texas on a trail bound for Oregon. The epic journey was narrated by Elsa Dutton, daughter of James and Margaret Dutton. The narration itself was beautifully told in a fashion worthy of the writings of Willa Cather. This heartbreakling journey was full of the trials and tribulations of a rag-tag compilation of Americans seeking a better way of life for their family and bunch of terribly ill-prepared immigrants from eastern Europe. These people had no idea what traveling halfway across a then unsettled and uncivilized continent involved. Most had no life skills like handling horses and lovestock, using firearms or even swimming which might have come on handy at one point of the story. Now, anyone who has seen Yellowstone tv series can attest to, writer Sheridan isn't afraid to invoke lots of adult language and violence. If this is offensive to you then you might steer clear and certainly think twice about letting the kiddies watch this. However if expert storytelling and a love of historical adventure trips your trigger the this might be your thing. The producers give to you in what I believe (in my own inexpert opinion) everything that that our forebears might have had to endure along this very long and frightening trek across our very young nation. Everything from rattlesnakes to renegade Indians to tornados in the American West is encountered along the way. Get the popcorn and diet drink ready and sit back to binge-watch this 10 part miniseries. Hope you enjoy it!

A return to the roots of the Western genre!
If you're a fan of the Yellowstone series, then I highly recommend this one. And even if you haven't seen the Yellowstone series, no need to worry, it doesn't require you to know anything about it. Just jump right in. All that you need to know is that this is a prequel series set in (as the title suggests) 1883, during the time when people were expanding out West, and follows the Dutton Family as they attempt to make a new life for themselves away from civilization. Along the way, they are accompanied by other characters who are looking to do the same thing, facing many dangers and struggles along the way. Taylor Sheridan does an amazing job making this feel like the Old West, in more than one sense. This show doesn't shy away from the hardships of the times, especially in the brutal reality that other Westerns don't show. All of the cast involved do an amazing job in their roles. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have amazing chemistry as James and Margaret Dutton (especially since they are married in real life), making their moments so believable whenever they are on screen. Isabel May does well as Elsa Dutton (and no, she doesn't have ice powers), providing a certain level of innocence and naiveness to the new world she is experiencing. LaMonica Garrett is also a nice addition Thomas. But the biggest surprise was seeing Sam Elliot as Shea Brennan, who does an amazing job in the role he is given. He fits into the role of a cowboy so amazing well, especially with that voice of his. I didn't realize he was still acting until this show came out, which made me all the more excited. I have some problems with the story, mainly that the pacing can be off and the passage of time aren't always made clear, except when someone mentions it. Elsa can get on my nerves from time to time, as she tends to butt heads with the elderly (mainly her mom). But aside from that, the story is done well enough, and the characters make the journey worth it. And the ending is very emotional, which is what made this show so memorable than just being a stand-alone prequel. I give 1883 a rating of 7/10 and a "Worth buying for my Bluray Collection".
