In my opinion the best textbook in molecular biology.
I also own the second edition and a comparison with this edition makes you realise the enormous progress in this field. In addition, there are many examples on the web, videos, tests and so on. I only envy the younger ones who can start from this incredible foundation!!!

Very happy to own this book
I bought as second hand from Amazon warehouse, and well, there’s few minor damages, but I got the online coverage as well, so by far I more then happy!

On uni reading lists
But so far, I have found it really wordy and unstructured. It's like reading a stream of consciousness. Doesn't develop a subject or provoke any thought before drifting into another topic. Doesn't explain the basics which good textbooks do - they ensure everyone is on the same page. It just rambles. Thousands of excellent science books out there, so no idea why this is on the reading lists.

One of the best, online resources are mostly for students!
Excellent book, excellent production. Lot of new information. Great overall buy. The only problem is for individual buyer, most of the video and online resources are inaccessible. That is a great loss. Should remain open to anyone who purchase the book.

I am humbled to write one of the first reviews of this great work of science. As an introduction, I am not a scientist and have studied cell biology as a hobby for 50 years. I want to tell you why I call this work the Queen of Cell Biology Textbooks. It may be 1404 pages , but research in cell biology has exploded since I graduated college in 1969. This is only a five authored book, unlike encyclopedias of cell biology, and I think it should be read from beginning to end to have the whole experience of the magnificent research that has occurred since. The mysteries of the cell are unending, and each discovery starting from the structure of DNA in 1952 to mRNA vaccines in 2021 has profound significance for mankind's journey into the micro-world. As an example of the teaching techniques, consider the chapter on Control of Gene Expression. Every new or complicated concept is explained three times: in the text, in the accompanying illustration, and in the caption of the illustration. Every time I have been confused by the text, the two back explanations clear it up. There is meticulous attention to teaching throughout the book; it is not written just for the scientist who works in the lab or for graduate student; it is written by just a few authors to teach anyone who wants to tackle the challenge of understanding the cell just for its beauty and meticulous construction. Buy the hard cover text for a permanent place in your library of the cell. Congratulations to the authors who have done a great job. Thomas Weisman MD Tucson, Arizona

Comprehensive and beautifully illustrated, this text has been popular for 7 editions over more than a generation, and the new edition is only one year old. Still useful for grad students for review of everything outside their specific project, where even more uptodate articles and more detailed methodology descriptions are likely needed.
