Drum Solos: The Art of Phrasing

Yes, excellent
This book is a very well organized library of beautiful blends of phrases. Very melodic and challenging, there's history here as well as being modern. This book may appear to be simple but don't be fooled, this is very challenging. All you have to do is bust open tempos and mix/divide up the phrases to find yourself easily in the weeds. Find over-the-bar-line patterns and work em'. Use your imagination. For those ingeniously gifted, possibly choose to displace phrases or metrically modulate.Other than 3, the book will not explore odd time sigs. Well again, just port to odd meters.Note the phrases are built for a 5 or 4 piece kit. Just adapt for your needs, remember imagination. To play only what your read is NOT the goal - to internalize the skills and musicality it offers, dig it?Nice Colin!

Wonderful Book
I bought this book after purchasing his bass drum control book. This is a great book. I also watched a YouTube video of Mr. Bailey discussing the text. What a smooth player. My high school band director used to say, "Any fool idiot can play loud. It takes a real musician to play soft." Mr. Bailey shows he is a great musician in the video I watched. Anyway, I am really excited about this book.

Buy it and use it now. Practical. Then take the essence with you on your journey.
This is an excellent resource for any conscientious student or anyone trying to see into the heart of practical performance practice on the drum set. There is nothing simplistic or unapproachable but all useful. Its in fact a drumming counterpoint to William Strunks and E.B. Whites "Elements of style." I use it and use it with my students who use it at our weekly jam sessions. All of the exercises are not meant to be continually used verbatim in musical conversations; Oh no!...more as a way to take you and your boat out to the horizon with some ideas about how to function in the ocean that is music. On the other hand if you were to pepper your playing with one in here and there, it would be a good thing. Like a quote which is honorific.

Not worth it
There is better material in other books. If you want examples of what's included in the book, check out his Youtube videos - pretty simplistic. Don't waste your money on this one.

I liked the on line and bought the book
Between the two previous reviews. I liked the on line and bought the book. You get :- the book in two parts, the second going with the free CD to drum along with. The first half of the book is all notation, following a helpful introduction. No further text though. The on line videos cover the first lessons, then you are on you own.If you sight read tab at playing speed, it's OK. I sight read at snail pace, so the best thing to say is that it's going to improve me. Plenty of inspiration here, but CB does not hold your hand all through. You get the flavour from the videos, as far as they go. Not for complete beginners. All in all, worth having, after all it's the cost of half an hours coaching, and there's a lot here if you are prepared to work at it.
