Building a Sectional Layout (Model Railroad Books)

Another look at Pelle Soeborg's excellent work. Full of great ideas and info for layout builders, both beginning and advanced. Full of fine photos and clear diagrams.

Amazing details!! VERY useful source for modelers.

Soeborg is one of the more creative authors in model railroading, often coming up with new ideas. His HO models push the limits of realism so in some photos it's hard to tell if it's a model or the real thing. He says his primary love is scenery, and that's the focus of 5 or 6 of the 9 chapters. The photos, captions and text focus on the specifics of how he built what he calls a "sectional layout". He built 5 rectangular sections of the same dimensions, along with others need to make the corners and other parts of this smaller layout which fits in a room 11' x 22'. All sections rest on a separate series of wood brackets which join to the walls. If you're looking for info on building self-contained modules with legs you'll need a different book. To my knowledge while some of his techniques have been published elsewhere, none of this book is directly reprinted, which is important because some Kalmbach books are reprints of articles previously published in Model Railroader, and it's not always easy to tell which books fall into this latter category. I gave it 4 stars because $22 list for a 90-page book is excessive, IMO. Kate Millatt's excellent scenery book, also published by Kalmbach, and featuring different ideas so minimal overlap with Soeborg's book, is $25 list for 188 pages. Pelle Søeborg is a great modeler and an excellent writer and photographer. It shows in this book as it has in his articles which made me excited to get my copy ASAP. However, the book is not what I expected or needed as it focuses on building a semi-permanent layout, attached to the walls. My living situation is most like that of an apartment-dweller with more than 5 years in a given home unlikely. More attention to portability would have been appreciated. I wish there had been more of a sample available. I still expect to learn some things from the book.

Zuerst wird vom Autor das Layout vorgestellt. Es handelt sich um die Bauweise "an der Wand entlang", also die Anordnung der Holz-Spanten-Segmente an allen 4 Wänden eines Zimmers incl. Ringschluss im Türbereich per klappbarem Teil als Durchgang/Eingang ins Zimmer. Die Segmente werden an der Wand fixiert, so daß noch Platz bzw. Stauraum darunter bleibt. Es gibt also keine tieferen Ebenenen als Staging-Yard/Schatten- bahnhof (Single-Deck-Bauweise). Dieser Bau wird gut gezeigt mit vielen Fotos. Dann erfolgt die Verlegung des Gleises incl. Kork-Unterlage. Da würde ich anderes Material nehmen, aber das kann jeder selbst entscheiden. Auch die erste farbliche Gestaltung des Gleises wird gezeigt. Danach wird die Montage eines Backdrops/Modellbahnhintergrundes in Form einer Fotomontage erläutert. Auch sehr interessant. Dann wird Landschaftsgestaltung per Hartschaum und Begrünung incl. Selbstbau von Bäumen u.s.w. veranschaulicht, auch wieder mit vielen Fotos. Nun folgt die Integration einer Brücke, wobei viele Teile im Selbstbau entstehen bzw. den Bedürfnissen angepasst werden, alles auch wieder incl. farblicher Gestaltung bzw. Patinierung. Sehr schön! Es folgt Straßenbau. Hier wird relativ aufwendig mit Plaster/Spachtelmasse gearbeitet, diese Bauweise wird vom Autor empfohlen und sieht auf den Fotos prima aus. Die Bruch- bzw. Schadstellen in der Straße und die Patinierung machen das Ganze ziemlich realistisch. Es folgt der Selbstbau von Gebäuden aus z.B. Strukturplatten aus Kunststoff, da könnte man evtl. alternativ Lasercut-Teile nehmen, aber oft ist auch ein Materialmix die beste Lösung, also Teile aus z.B. Kunststoff/Holz/Pappe/Messingprofil u.s.w.. Der abschließende Höhepunkt besteht aus dem Selbstbau eines großen Getreide- speichers, in diesem Zusammenhang sei erwähnt,daß das Layout im Flachland (Midwest) angesiedelt ist, wo es keine Berge, dafür aber viele Felder und eben auch Getreidespeicher gibt. Dieser Gerteidespeicher wird teilweise aus Bausatzteilen, die angepasst und verändert werden und aus Kunststoffprofilen (Stichwort Evergreen) sowie aus Messingteilen vom Autor gefertigt und anschließend patiniert. Dies es wirklich ein Highlight dieses prima Buches und wie für mich gemacht, da ich auch den Bau einer Getreidemühle plane. Abschließend kann ich sagen: der Kauf hat sich gelohnt, auch wenn der Segmentbau und die Gleisverlegung für mich persönlich nicht neu waren.

Acompanho o autor nestes muitos anos em que ele colabora para a revista mensal Model Railroader e o nível de detalhamento de seus projetos sempre foram e são marcas registradas. Tudo isso foi muito bem compilado nesta obra com bons descritivos e fotos do que foi pensado e realmente estruturado no projeto. Tenho outros livros do Pelle e cada um deles são uma verdadeira aula quando se trata de retratar com máximo realismo os mais diversos cenários. Recomendo.
