Tool I rely on for every day use.
Been using Makita impacts for years. Bought this one to replace my last Makita impact. That I broke with a 30 foot drop off a scissor lift onto concrete floor. Think this is the first Makita impact I broke in 20 years of commercial/Industrial Electrical. Normally there stolen/ "lost". Or passed on to an apprentice when I'm upgrading. I have the Japanese built version of this model. That I keep for my home projects. And they both have the same quality feel and performance. Very smooth motor. Great power. And all the controls work as they should. Lights are bright. Adding speed control. Where the old light use to go. Is a great feature. Allows you to change speeds with 1 hand and not changing grips. May sound like a small thing. But when your working in tight spots. It helps. I expect this impact will give me the same bullet proof reliability I rely on from my past Makita impacts. Side note the 6.0 battery survived the fall with out issue.

Strange packaging but quality tool
I was on the fence about returning this driver when it arrived as it just showed up in a cardboard box. No packaging, no wrapper, no stickers, no marketing information attached or anything. It was just an impact driver dropped into a box, taped up and shipped. It seemed off. I logged into Makita's site and was able to successfully register the product and there was no indication that there was anything amiss. The condition of the driver appeared to be brand new, so I popped in on of my 18v batteries and confirmed it worked. Since everything appeared in order, I decided to keep it. After having used this for a bit, I am very happy with the features that this impact driver provides. It is nice to have a more compact and feature-packed impact driver so I am not using my 18v Makita drill to do all of the tasks. It can now stick to drill work and I have a much more cable tool for dealing with fasteners. This impact driver is made in China, not the ones made in Japan. I think this has been the way for many of their tools for a while now and I honestly haven't noticed a difference in quality or longevity. Though too early to speak to the longevity of this, I have no reason to believe it won't last at least as long as my other Makita gear, some of which is 12+ years old and still good as the day it was new. So besides the sketchy packaging, this has completely met my expectations at a great price.

Versatile Tool - Many Attachments Available
I have been using this drill for about 2 years and it has performed flawlessly. I continue to purchase additional attachments for specialty projects around the house. It's been a very valuable tool for my toolbox.

Problematic for large Hands
I dislike having to return items, but it is often necessary when you buy online. My local Home Depot offers a 30 day return on tools. Online–you research best you can, but the final test is in using the product. A forward and reverse trigger should have nice solid detents - Click, Click, Click. This Makita's action is passible, but i would prefer that it have a more solid detent action with a little more pressure to switch. This Makita is an XDT19 model, (the Amazon Ad says XDT19Z)? Looking at the name plate on the bottom–no "Z." Does that matter? Came bubble-wrapped in a plain box. Belt holder in a separate little baggie in the bottom of the box that could be easily overlooked. No Manual or Registration Card either. Unable to find out what the Z is for. Maybe a revision with a taller grip handle? It must stand for something extra or revised. This device could be exchanged solely on the basis that it's not the same as advertised. It has four operating Modes. N0. 2 is a special reverse mode that I must assume–no Manual in the box–is for loosening larger nuts and bolts–meh-seems redundant? I don't need it, but it might be of good use for a different application than mine. A moot point, as I am never going to need to find out. In this highly competitive Market, everyone is looking for an edge to gain Market Share. Like LED lights for mode change instead of an old-fashioned Manual detent switch. Modern propaganda wants us to believe that everything new is better than anything older. Higher speed, more vibes per second-really? Like this fwd/rev switch. Not enough resistance when switching gears that caused me to return it after only a few minutes use—because...the hand grip, (handle) is at least 1/2 inch too short! Easily spotted when viewed along side other Brands. In the one-upmanship battle for compactness, Makita has missed the mark for me, by being too compact; obviously designed as a desirable feature. My hands are somewhat large, but not like a lot of Construction Workers that I know. With the switch in reverse, i.e. pushed to the right; when bearing down with the necessary force to remove some old Deck Screws, requires a forceful grip on the handle. The inside of the Index (trigger), finger close to the knuckle invariably brushes against the switch and pushes it to the left when you pull the trigger. Surprise! instead of removing the screw, I am instead, driving it deeper. It auto-switched to forward (clockwise), 4 out of 5 attempts very easily, and you can't always feel that it has switched without looking at it, even with me being extra careful. After several valiant attempts to compensate, was forced to adapt with an uncomfortable and compromising grip whereby I just gave up. Impractical! Too much trouble! If the switch had just a little more oomph, needing more pressure to switch, it might have been OK. Had I been wearing Wearing Gloves it would utterly impossible to use. For me this is a game-changer, A real-deal problem, not just a nit-picky matter of personal preference. The Makita has a lot of built-in refinement that I never got far enough along to check out. It will only take a few moments to uncover this difficulty. You would be able to return to Seller with only a few minutes use. It wouldn't be a problem at all for someone with an average to small width hand that doesn't overlap the switch. I never got past first base with this device, but I did have my Son use it for a bit; he's 6'4" and said he ran into the same problem so, naturally preferred to use his own go-to, single-speed Red driver that he swears by instead of the Makita. With his trusty old one-speed driver he easily removed a few hundred 3 inch screws just as easily as I did with a newer 3-speed Yellow Brand. Hmmmm? My medium-sized, so-handy-with-tools, Daughter-in Law also gave it a go with the same result of the Surprise Reverse Syndrome! Therefore I'm unable to give any feedback on some of the more positive aspects of this Impact Driver, which I'm sure it has–for smaller hands. I give it four stars because this is strictly an individual ergonomic problem and not a full evaluation of it in actual use. I'm tempted to make it 3 1/2 stars for lack of a Manual and Registration Card, but that depends on the individual whether or not that really amounts to anything. I don't like to give less than 5 stars, but this is no small, (pun intended), obstacle that for me proved unsurmountable. Might as well go to your local Big Box Store or friendly neighborhood Tool Specialty Store where you can at least check this out for yourself, pre-purchase. And, for a little extra loot you may find one in the Factory shipping box with a Manual and Registration Card, Carry Bag, Charger and Battery.

My new goto tool for working with wood screws. Like the 4 speed settings, short body length to fit in tight spaces, ability to turn off impact for drilling, and long battery life.
