This bestselling dictionary is written by one of the leading philosophers of our time, and it is widely recognized as the best dictionary of its kind. Comprehensive and authoritative, it covers every aspect of philosophy from Aristotle to Zen . With clear and concise definitions, it provides lively and accessible coverage of not only Western philosophical traditions, but also themes from Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophy. Entries include over 400 biographies of famous and influential philosophers, in-depth analysis of philosophical terms and concepts, and a chronology of philosophical events stretching from 10,000 BC to the present day. New entries on philosophy of economics, social theory, neuroscience, philosophy of the mind, and moral conceptions bring the third edition of this dictionary fully up to date. Fully cross-referenced and containing over 3,300 alphabetical entries, it is the ideal introduction to philosophy for anyone with an interest in the subject, and it is an indispensable work of reference for students and teachers. Review: The reference you need to know yourSelf... more analytically. - This reference book empowered me to share the big ideas of my undergraduate philosophy education with my atheist brother who's inspired by the cold comforts of rationality. He no longer needs to reflexively reduce the world to mindless, miniscule entities. Review: A nice little dictionary with many interesting articles in tiny print. - This is the 3rd edition of Blackburn's handy dictionary. It's much improved, and more comprehensive than the 1st edition I used to own. That 1st edition, in turn, replaced my well-used and much-loved copy of Priest's revision of Flew's Dictionary of Philosophy. Blackburn is a bit more up to date, a bit more inclusive, more opinionated, and maybe a little easier to follow. Each one was just the right size and pretty much the right level for an amateur like me.

Useful tool
A great tool to have for those beginning to delve into philosophical writings. Much of philosophy builds on references to other works and terms having a specific meaning and having such a book to build up understanding of those terms is quite helpful so you can continue reading the present work with increased comprehension. I also find it useful in pursuing threads of philosophic thought and identifying areas of interest.

Its Decent
It has a great variety of terms (a lot that I still dont know) so its great for a student in philosophy or if youre just fascinated by it like me. My only problem is that quite a bit of the definitions that I've read sound subjective. Not saying they're not true or that the definitions are arbitrary, Its just there tends to be a bit of emotion in the definitions (ones that ive read) that kind of suggest the authors personal view of the philosophical terms. For example the definition on "sex" about its history in philosophy sounds very emotional and not an objective description of the subject.

Maybe the best in the field - get it!
Exactly want I wanted for my college Philosophy courses. I still love a paperback size dictionary and when the prof. has a "no electronic" ban then boom it comes in really handy. I used it and it has way more than my last philosophy dictionary (a total failure)

Basic tool for philosophy
Very well-made, consistent dictionary for basic problems in philosophy. A reference. A star less for the shipping since the courier threw it into my garden.
