A very influential classic, easy to read
I’m always very grateful to C S Lewis for writing this book. I first read it over 35 years ago, having borrowed it from a friend after I saw it in their bookcase. At that point I thought Christianity was intellectual suicide. The book showed me that a very intelligent man could be a Christian, and that there are even good reasons for thinking that Christianity is true. It was easy to read and really made me think. It started me on a three-year journey looking into Christianity, writing down all my questions and objections about it and looking for answers. Eventually I decided I had enough answers and evidence, and committed myself to follow Jesus. This is the best decision I have ever made, and I look forward to thanking C S Lewis when I meet him in heaven.

A thoroughly decent read
What an incredible read. I’ve collected my thoughts at the end of each chapter and reflected on what it means to me. It’s enlightening, there’s no religion forced on you, this is a book that anyone can read to learn how to be a decent person and why you always were.

An excellent overview of Christian beliefs
I found this book to very enjoyable and easy to read, and each chapter was well explained. I found the first 'Book' within to be the weakest, and left me with a lot of questions that weren't answered, but the rest of the book was very good. It is worth remembering that it is an introduction and overview of the core Christian beliefs and values, there are chapters which feel slightly skimmed over, and more depth is required, but that would be beyond the scale of the book. I bought the hardback, and I'm not impressed with the quality. Removing the dust cover reveals a dull brown book that feels very cheap. Overall it loses out on the five star nature for the first portion of the book being weak, and the hardcover version isn't up to par.

Such a great book
For some reason while I read all the Narnia books as a child I’ve never read any of CS Lewis more ‘serious’ books. Mere Christianity is such an easy read. He doesn’t write as if he’s writing a PhD but rather like he’s sitting across the table to me just chatting. I suppose that makes sense given I believe this book was a compilation of talks he gave on BBC radio back in the day. I particularly enjoy the way he built his thesis of belief in Christianity from simple observations and develops his ideas from nothingness to a god, then from there to the Christian God and then to Christ and beyond to the impact of Christianity on the human nature. His analogies are really simple and effective. There are places near the end of the book that I felt the clarity got a little muddled in places but that’s probably just me. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and looking forward to reading the others.

I think every Christian should read Mere Christianity at least once. CS Lewis did an incredible job in conceptualizing this beautiful and complex religion. As the book progresses, more and more difficult theological concepts are introduced, and there is a good chance that majority of Christians will discover something new for themselves. And if you’re not a Christian? Stop reading the reviews, this book is a must!!!

Everything is good just go for it. It even comes with sepia-toned pages.

Unlike as written by MarkM my copy arrived properly written and laid out. Though it’s the same cover as here and a hard copy, it only cost $16.98 so keep searching.

I’m not even finished with this book yet, but I felt like I needed to say something about it. Mere Christianity is not a light or fluffy read. It really makes you think. C.S. Lewis explains things in a very logical and straightforward way, which I appreciate. He talks about big topics like morality and faith in a way that feels honest and thoughtful, not pushy. There were a few parts I had to reread because they’re quite dense, but that’s also what makes it good. It challenges you. Even when I don’t fully understand something, I find myself thinking about it later in the day. If you’re looking for something simple and devotional, this might not be it. But if you want something that stretches your thinking and makes you reflect more deeply on what you believe, it’s definitely worth reading. I’ll update this once I finish it, but so far I’m really glad I started it.
