New in the "100 Ideas that Changed..." series, this book demonstrates how ideas influenced and defined graphic design, and how those ideas have manifested themselves in objects of design. The 100 entries, arranged broadly in chronological order, range from technical (overprinting, rub-on designs, split fountain); to stylistic (swashes on caps, loud typography, and white space); to objects (dust jackets, design handbooks); and methods (paper cut-outs, pixelation). Written by one of the world’s leading authorities on graphic design and lavishly illustrated, the book is both a great source of inspiration and a provocative record of some of the best examples of graphic design from the last hundred years. Also part of the series: 100 Ideas That Changed Architecture (Sep 2011), 100 Ideas That Changed Fashion (Sep 2011) Upcoming titles: 100 Ideas That Changed Film (Spr 2012), 100 Ideas That Changed Art (Aut 2012), 100 Ideas That Changed Photography (Aut 2012) Review: Great for broadening your knowledge - This is a great book for those wanting to know more about the influences on graphic design over the last few thousand years! It is very comprehensive, with each section having just 2 pages dedicated to it - I thought the book may not allow me to delve deep enough into various subjects but it is very cleverly (and well) written as each section has well thought out text and accompanying illustrations but more importantly it references artists, books, movements etc. I have found that in order to get the most out of this book I sit reading it at my computer and google the references (both the web and google images). It is a great resource. Review: Inspiring - I think this should be found in any aspiring graphic designer's library. It's a compact and not particularly expensive book with lots of fine pictures and lucid descriptions of the point the author is trying to make. I keep on dipping into it, and I've been at this game for 30 years now. I particularly like how each of the ideas is showcased pertinent detail, but also includes many other smaller items that might go unnoticed. For a concise overview of the last 80 or so years I don't think I've seen a better book recently.

Good book, good smaller size
I was a bit disappointed in the book. It is great to have but I was kind of let down by the work inside? That's personal preference! I thought there would be more outstanding work that I really admired.. Not really the case for a lot of it sorry! But a lovely book and probably a very nice gift to a graphic design student!

Fascinating, beautiful book
I bought this book for my daughter who will be studying graphic design in the fall. It is a wonderful book filled with examples of the author's top 100. From small concepts, such as font usage, to the large architectural realm, it is covered well within this book. Each of these topics can be covered further through some simple research, in case you want more in-depth understanding. This book simply gives a brief overview of each of each subject area and a few examples. Makes for a great conversation starter as you can flip through the pages and be inspired or forced to look at a subject differently. Overall - a great primer into the world of Graphic Design.

Mal.
