A Must-Have for Any Serious Singer — Perfect for Travel, Warm-Ups, and Breath Training
As a professional opera singer who travels extensively—especially during the demanding audition season—I’m always on the lookout for tools that help me maintain my vocal health and technique wherever I go. The TroyStudio Vocal Dampener has been an absolute game-changer for me. Traveling between hotels, Airbnbs, and various performance venues means I often have to warm up in less-than-ideal spaces—thin walls, neighbors nearby, and limited privacy. This vocal dampener lets me practice and warm up my voice quietly and discreetly, without disturbing anyone or feeling self-conscious. The silicone material is soft and comfortable, and it fits well over the mouth, significantly reducing sound leakage while still allowing me to engage fully with my breath and vocal cords. More than just a sound silencer, it’s also become an invaluable tool for breath technique training. Because it restricts airflow just enough, it encourages me to control my breath support more efficiently, helping me build strength and stamina even when I can’t sing at full volume. This is critical during busy seasons when I have multiple auditions and rehearsals packed closely together. I’ve also used it as a stress relief tool when I need to let out some frustration quietly—without alarming hotel staff or family members! The design is odorless, portable, and easy to clean, making it perfect for tossing into my carry-on or rehearsal bag. Overall, the TroyStudio Vocal Dampener is not just a “nice to have” but an essential part of my vocal routine now. If you’re a singer—whether professional or hobbyist—or anyone who needs to practice vocalization or breathing exercises in a quiet environment, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It combines quality, functionality, and portability in a way that truly supports vocal health on the go.

Great semi occluded sounding damping warm up tool!
Provides a semi-occluded (some backpressure or air resistance against vocal cords due to the tube chambering) vocal warmup tool that allows most of the feeling and sensation of full voice singing with less sound bothering the neighbors. I use this frequently to get 90% of my pre-show warmups done, or even some rehearsing on off days, when I can't get to a discrete place to sing at full voice (back stage, outside a venue on the street, in a hotel room, in an office building, etc.). This provides me with MOST of what I need to be stage ready, though I recommend trying to do at least 5 for minutes of warming up with no resistance, to get your voice ready for open air. I haven't measured the decibel reduction, but mostly it mutes the high end, so even if people can hear me they hear "Mum wum uh mum" rather than full screaming loud cutting vocal--I'm guessing it cuts my 98 decibel loud singing to 82 decibel woofy sounding singing with no clarity of the lyrics. The rubber part separates easily from the plastic, which is good so it doesn't break in my luggage, and is easy to wash the rubber part that contacts my face (and collects vapor from my exhalation). This is a life saver for me when I'm going to sing and can't find a safe area to warm up, especially as I sing loud music in a genre where it wouldn't be cool for the audience to hear me singing show tunes or Christmas carols in public. It does look a bit weird, so pedestrians seeing me do this on the street outside of venues give me weird looks... but that's way better than my customers inside the venue hearing me warm up!

It helps!! Scream and it dampens about 30%
It just looks like such a creepy weird Medical device. They really should invest in making it look more like a musical instrument. Or, just something that doesn't look like some kind of Surgical tool. Imagine your guests seeing this thing sitting on a countertop table somewhere. . "What the heck is this!?" lol. But it does help. You ma want to project, and this will let you do it, fairly comfortably, and reduce a good amount of the noise.

It works! The end.
As a mom, this has saved my ears. My daughter has a beautiful voice but she’s got projection! Works great!

Must buy for vocal warm ups Or training your vocals.
This device is a amazing! You know when your singing or trying to hit them high notes or certain notes and your throat hurts or mouth feels dry. This mouth gadget fix it all! This is a very good product for practice and vocal warm ups. It does smell weird when you get it and look at the picture of how they use it. Im talking about i can sing anything now! you're not suppose to record yourself while using this product. (I mean you can but you'll sound muffled.) It's good for vocal warm ups. Easy to set up and thick product. Ehhh the price is okay.

Amazing sound diffusor
I read the reviews and decided to get one and try it out for myself and I have to say that of all the various singing products I've tried this one is the best that I've purchased. Most of the products out there are a waste of money. I've bought breathing devices, singing straws, etc. and nothing compares to the value that this one brings. The Vocal Dampener drastically reduces the volume of your singing so that if you live in a place where your neighbors can hear you singing, this will help you a lot. I read some of the reviews that it doesn't dampen enough, that you can still hear some sound. Yes you can hear a little sound, but not even close enough to bother your neighbors. It's about a 20 db reduction, which is huge, especially of you have a powerful voice. However, If you buy this and your neighbors can still hear you it's likely not the dampeners fault, it's probably that your walls are simply too thin. If you're a singer you need to be able to practice while the same mouth shape and muscular 'balance'. that you use when singing. This dampener allows you to do that because it's large and fits around your mouth comfortably, allowing you to make large and exaggerated mouth shapes or small mouth shapes. It also provides a little back pressure, just enough to be helpful for singing. The only other method that comes close to this is to use a heavy pillow to dampen your sound, but this is not a good idea. Your brain and ears need at some auditory feedback when you sing so that you can both hear how you sound and also feel the feelings you need to make sure you're singing the way you want to. A pillow does not provide this. This device does. I'm very happy i bought this and will be using it all the time.

Mixed feelings
I think this is a good product in that it does what it says it does, but there are just some fundamental flaws to using it. One is that it obviously doesn't dampen nasal resonance, which, if you're singing correctly, is still pretty loud. If you try to put it over your nose you can't breathe, so that's off the table. It's useful if I just need a lot of repetition on a song and I'm not trying to work technique, but otherwise it's kind of restrictive. You can hear yourself, but not to the extent you need to truly know what you most need to work on.

A MUST-HAVE for singers!
My partner and I are both musicians. We do both clean and harsh vocals (for the uninitiated that basically means "regular singing" and "metal screams"), and we are trying to figure out an option for practice space outside the home. In the meantime, we still gotta practice! My partner in particular is LOUD and reaches these insane soaring high notes that last forever... much to the chagrin of our neighbors, as I'm sure you can imagine. It was only a matter of time before we got a noise complaint, and we wanted to avoid that. DIY soundproofing wasn't cutting it, especially when the options we've found so far were neither cheap nor tenant-friendly. I found this product and was skeptical, but willing to try it. The great news is, we can practice at home without holding back or worrying now! We live in a 70+ y/o home with original windows, so if my partner is singing, it's loud from outside too. But if they belt into the "scream tube" and I step outside, I can still hear it, but quiet and muffled. Our street gets noisy enough to where it may even get lost completely among the sounds of idling trucks and kids at play. The sound reduction is really incredible. I'm guessing for people who live in more modern, soundproofed buildings, this could go even further. There's not much to it really. Just make sure it's sealed against your face, and wash that part so it doesn't get gross. It doesn't absorb 100% of sound obviously... there's a chance your neighbors or housemates will still hear you... but the reduction is truly significant. It's an indispensable tool if you're a singer stuck in a shared home or apartment building but don't have anywhere else to practice. I also really get a kick out of the concept of a "scream tube." Even the phrase is funny. But hey, it works!
