Before the Best in the World
****This review is for CM Punk's Second City Saint DVD, For some reason it's also appearing under CM Punk's Icon DVD, I'll review ICON in the comments under this review, I'd rate it five stars.Second City Saint is the third(or first chronologically) Ring of Honor compilation on CM Punk highlighting his first two years with the company. In between some of the matches are relevant promos such as Punk's first appearance for ROH and confrontations with Raven. These can be hard to follow at times because of the poor sound quality and echoing microphones can make it hard to hear what's being said all the time. The following matches are included:CM Punk vs. Colt Cabana - This was an exhibition match before either man had a proper ROH contract and it was a decent back and forth match. Punk started working on Colt's arm but that didn't last long. Cabana worked over Punk's back to try and set up for the Colt 45. They knew each other well so they had plenty of counters for each other. It was a decent match showing what these two could do.CM Punk vs. Colt Cabana - This match was for a Ring of Honor contract and it showed as both men seemed to be fighting with more urgency than in their previous match. Both men clearly learnt from their first match as they would have counters ready for the moves their opponent hit last time. I think this was a better match than their last one.CM Punk vs. CW Anderson - This match started off with some mat wrestling, CM Punk was going after the leg of Anderson while Anderson seemed to be targeting the arm. It's a different kind of pace to Punk's usual matches with less flashy moves and a more grounded offence but it was still good.CM Punk vs. Raven - The match had unique rules where it would be regular ROH wrestling rules for the opening minutes but after that it would become Raven's rules where anything goes. Punk would get the upper hand to start the match but Raven was able to come back and hold his own in the wrestling part of the match. Then the Raven's rules section began and the match got more violent and aggressive but they didn't over do the weapon use in the match. It was a pretty good match to start of their feud.CM Punk & Ace Steel vs. Raven & Colt Cabana - This is another Raven's rules match so anything goes. For the first half of the match they stick to regular tag rules, tagging in and out but they still introduce a steel chair to do more damage. After that the match breaks down with everyone fighting at once in and around the ring. Cabana takes himself out after apparently injuring himself after he hits a moonsault to the outside leaving Punk and Steel to try and put Raven through a table to end the match. This was a decent match, I liked that they didn't just break down into chaos straight away and the match instead built up to that moment.CM Punk vs. BJ Whitmer - Early in the match Whitmer hit his head off the solid ground outside the ring which lead to Punk aiming most of his offence at his head. Punk set up a table at ringside that he tried to put BJ through but Whitmer managed to come back and get back into the match. This was a decent match with a brutal but indecisive finish.CM Punk & Colt Cabana vs. BJ Whitmer & Raven - This starts off like a regular tag match but it's no disqualification so soon breaks down with Punk hitting Whitmer with a chair and Raven hitting Cabana with one of his own. They fought around ringside and through the crowd which left Punk and Whitmer covered in blood. They eventually got back to the ring and the two teams fought back and forth in a violent match that really showed the hatred between Raven and Punk.CM Punk vs. Raven - This was a dog collar match where both men would be attached to each other via a long chain between two dog collars attached to their necks. Raven got the upper hand early on, choking Punk with the chain and busting him open. Punk turns the match around sending Raven through a table and from there the match is fairly even. Punk grabs a microphone to trash talk Raven whilst he has the upper hand. Unfortunately the finish isn't very good and hurts the match a bit. Up until that point it was a good and violent brawl with good use of the stipulation and the aftermath shows us that this rivalry isn't over.CM Punk vs. Terry Funk - This match starts off with mat wrestling but that doesn't last long before it becomes a brawl. Punk declares this a hardcore match and a chair and table are introduced. Funk goes for his moonsault and hurts his knee which Punk then viciously works over with Funk refusing to give up. This was a slower paced match to the others so far with a more old school feel to it. It wasn't anything special but it wasn't awful either.CM Punk vs. Raven - This was to be the finale to their feud and it would take place inside a steel cage. They started fighting before they even got into the cage. Raven busted CM Punk's head open early on and aggressively targeted his head with repeated knees. Punk fought back despite all the damage that had been done to him. Punk went for a diving leg drop off the top of the cage to try and finish Raven off and even hit him with his own finisher. This was a really violent and hard fought match, it did feel a bit anticlimactic having a blood feud like this end with an escape but the match itself was really good.CM Punk & Colt Cabana vs. Tomoaki Honma & Kazushi Miyamoto - This is a very even match between these two teams, Punk shows frustration towards Cabana for not being serious enough early on but they still manage to work together well. The match starts off slow and builds to an exciting and fast paced finish. This is my favourite match so far on this DVD.CM Punk, Colt Cabana & Ace Steel vs. Christopher Daniels, Dan Maff & BJ Whitmer - For quite a while in this 6 man tag match no team really gets a clear advantage for too long. Eventually the Second City Saints bust Dan Maff open and they then work him over and isolate him for a while. He gets the tag to Daniels and the match goes back and forth again with everyone hitting dives to the outside. The match eventually breaks down into chaos and the match just ends. That was a pretty good match but the non-finish isn't great. It probably worked to further their feud/storyline but on it's own it's a shame to not get a proper finish. The aftermath feels like it goes on for ages too as there's no structure to it, I didn't like that.CM Punk vs. AJ Styles - This is the finals of a tournament to crown the first ever ROH pure champion and so it's contested under the unique "pure rules". The official is clearly still getting used to the new rules in this one as he penalises Punk two of his rope breaks incorrectly. The match is more technical than a lot of the matches previously on the set which to me was a good thing. Punk target's Style's leg and knee throughout the match forcing him to use up his ropebreaks to protect himself. This was a really good match with lots of near falls, counters and strategy.CM Punk vs. AJ Styles - This was a rematch for the pure title and both men had clearly learnt from their previous match. Punk would put AJ in holds deliberately close to the ropes to try and cost him rope breaks and Styles was trying to reverse out of the holds as much as possible so he didn't end up with no breaks left as he did in the last match. The match was another technical one but like the previous one some suspect officiating cost Punk. It was another really good match though.CM Punk & Colt Cabana vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe - The saints started off the match strong for a while until a double team by the Briscoes allowed them to isolate Punk for a while. After eventually getting the tag from Cabana the Saints were back in the match and it lead to an exciting finish to a really great match which saw Punk work a more babyface style.CM Punk & Colt Cabana vs. Mark & Jay Briscoe - This was both team's second match of the night and the Saints went after Mark's previously hurt ribs as soon as possible, isolating him off for a while and blocking any attempt he made at a tag. This was another really good match between these two teams and it built up to another exciting finish. It wasn't quite as good as the previous match but still very good.CM Punk & Colt Cabana vs. Dan Maff & BJ Whitmer - This match has no disqualifications and is for the tag team championships. The Saints were the first to take advantage of the no DQ rule with double teams and using the rope to their advantage. They were tagging in and out to start with but eventually they just had all four men fighting at once. They fought away from the ring and into the crowd for a bit in the middle, this kind of hurt the flow of the match. The match started off good, went downhill for a while in the middle but fortunately picked up again towards the finish. This was a pretty good compilation of matches, towards the start of the set the matches were all decent, but there were quite a few matches that didn't feel like anything special but things got better as the set went a long. There's a good variety of matches on here too with the great technical matches with AJ Styles, some really good tag team wrestling and some violent brawls throughout his feud with Raven. The set is definitely worth it if you're a CM Punk fan with the highlights being his tag matches against the Briscoes and Honma/Miyamoto, the AJ Styles pure title matches and his feud with Raven.
