Absolutely superb product. Packed full of features.
These smoke alarms are excellent - everything about them screams quality - from the moment the box arrives at the door. You can tell that this is a premium product. Setup is easy, download the app and pair it with your WiFi then stick it on the ceiling. Buy more than one of these and they speak to each other as well as your WiFi/iPhone. New generation Nest Protect will detect smoke and Carbon Monoxide. These look great on the ceiling in any house. Pros + Cons + Premium Look & Feel + Ridiculously Easy Setup + Will alert you of any activations even if you are not home + They speak to you in a real voice rather than just beep + Early warning means they will give you a polite warning before full activation to allow you to open the windows and get the pancake smoke out + They speak to you and say where the smoke/CO has been detected so you know where the potential fire is + They flash green when you turn the lights off at night to let you know they are working properly + Night light function that lights the room up when you walk under them (or on all night if you want on the mains version) + Excellent App + Monthly status email advising how many activations + IFTTT (If This Then That) integration so if these go off, you can program to automatically shut the boiler down if it's a CO alarm - potential life saver. Even if you don't have the Nest thermostat (Mine is Honeywell Evohome) + 10 year sensor Cons: - None. This is absolutely the 'Next Generation' of smoke alarm. You don't need the Nest thermostat for these so if need a new smoke alarm, this is the one to go for. Yes they are pricey, but you can't put a price on a product like this in my opinion.

Perfect replacement for aging basic units that are due for replacement
This device is perfect for what it's designed to do. It's helpful in itself, and the accompanying software from Nest for your phone or PC works just as well. It's a nicely designed unit, substantail feeling with a great build quality. Installation is a doddle, providing you've already got the mains connection available for it to use. Pull out the piece of plastic preventing the batteries from connecting to the unit to power it on (do this BEFORE installation to the mains), and run through the setup process (the reason you do this before mounting to the ceiling is that there's a QR code on the back that you need to scan with the mobile app in order to register the device as yours on your account). Voice prompts go through a test routine, and then it instructs you to complete installation. My old detector had 3 wires connected to it - Live, Neutral and Interconnect. Nest Protect doesn't use the interconnection wire as it's all done wirelessly, so that can be cut back and insulated. Simply screw the backplate to the ceiling or wall, use the provided connector blocks (which are also great quality) to make the relevant connections for the provided wiring harness to Live and Neutral. Plug the harness into the device and clip the device to the ceiling. That's it! As far as day to day use goes...it's just a smoke/CO detector. But so much more advanced than the cheaper tat you can buy. It self-tests several times a day, and when you switch the lights off the ring glows green to let you know everything's OK. It'll also activate a white ring which is a "pathlight" so you can find your way around in the dark. This replaced one of my old mains based smoke alarms, and I'll shortly be buying another to replace the second one. All in all, highly recommended.

Highly recommended for the gadget lover!
Well, where to begin... Is this a lot of money? sure, but is it worth it? that may depend on whether you have a love of gadgets or not! On the face of it this is an expensive smoke and CO detector, but to someone who owns more than one Nest product or someone who is looking for a "connected home" this is just what your after. It is well built and very simple to set up. I am an electrician and installed the 230V version with absolute ease, The instructions are very clear and concise and the Protect is set up before it goes up onto the ceiling. It is set up by downloading the Nest app which serves as the place you can deal with all you rNest products if you have more than one. From there you make an account and add the product by scanning the QR code on the back of it. You then run through some quick settings and your done! I like the pathway feature which can illuminate when you walk under it or can stay illuminated the whole time it is dark. I was hoping to have this replace leaving a light on, however its not bright enough for my liking, so a nice feature but for me it could have been brighter. If you have the Nest thermostat it also has a feature where if the Nest Protect detects CO the Thermostat will shut off the boiler. Again nice little touches. I also like the touch that you can connect it to Phillips Hue bulbs, so you could for example have them flash red upon an alert or come on at full brightness to light your path. Overall, yes its expensive but its well tied in to other Nest products and other things like Phillips Hue and it has a CO and smoke detector built in. I'd say its worth the money for the gadget loving homeowner.

Excellent product, nothing else on the market comes even close, maybe that's why it's overpriced
This is an excellent product, and when I say that I am not only taking into account the quality of the product and the features it offers, but also the ease of install, the ease of use, the usability of the app, and for me, most importantly, the ability to be able to monitor it and silence the alarm remotely if needed. You can tell that a lot of time and effort has gone in to the design of this as it looks great, and is so easy to install. One thing I was concerned about was getting it to line up straight as it is square rather than the usual round shape. They have got around this issue by providing a back plate that you first attach to the ceiling and the unit then connects to that back plate. There is enough adjustment on that plate so that you can turn the unit to line it up straight when attaching it. The app itself is so easy to use and you just follow the on screen instructions to get it working. Once you do that it automatically joins any other Nest alarms you may have in your house that have also been installed using this app. to create that all important inter-link. So if anyone is not familiar with what the inter-link function does, put quite simply, if one alarm goes off, this sets off the other alarms to inform you which alarm has started everything off, which is vital if you had a fire break out, as you would know exactly which way to head for safety. I've tried a few smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the past and I have always preferred to go with a wired one that has a battery backup as a product such as this is so important peoples lives depend on it working when called upon. The beauty of this is that it constantly checks itself to ensure it is working and reports back to the app, which you can access and monitor wherever you are in the world. For those who are a bit old school and prefer to be able to test and silence the alarm without having to use an app then that option is also available, by simply pressing the centre circle on the unit. Normally you would install a heat alarm in the kitchen rather than a smoke alarm, but as long as you install this the correct distance away from any cookers and ovens then this works perfectly fine. I have one of these installed in my kitchen and it's been about 2 months since I had them installed and I haven't had a single false alarm, as using the split-spectrum feature this is very good at spotting slow burning and fast burning fires depending on the type of smoke detected. On one occasion the kitchen did get smoked out with the cooking and it was good to see this kick into action and it gave a verbal warning that smoke was detected. We simply silenced the alarm and opened the doors and windows so that it wouldn't go off again. Although nothing else on the market comes anywhere even close to this in any aspect you wish to use to compare, the reason why I have only given this 4 stars instead of the 5 it truly deserves, is because of the price. I think the only reason why it is close to £100 is because there is no competition so they can charge what they like for it, as I guess you can't put a price on safety

Safety, but with a focus on high tech usability
Arrives in a compact box that looks the part. It's very expensive, but a great piece of kit and when you unbox it it feels quality. I chose the wired version as it's for a house getting a full rewire so wasn't too much of an issue to install - a battery version is also available at the same price. Very easy to setup and has some nice touches such as the nighty promise (it quickly glows green) to show you all is okay, and the pathlight that fires up the light if it detects movement at night, allowing you to move around without putting on a main light. It's main function is to detect smoke, fire or carbon monoxide - thankfully I've not had to test this as yet but have every confidence. I'm intending to get the Nest thermostat when the new boiler is in, and I understand the systems will link together and learn the patterns of the house so if other devices get released in the future then looks like a good investment. It's not a cheap product, and you can get 3 similar devices for the same price. But it has a wealth of internet features, and is a joy to use. If you like gadgets and don't mind spending a bit more than you need for an eye on the future then this is for you. Recommended.

"Almost" Everything You Need In The Kit
These alarms are great (We have installed 3) The features they contain probably make this the most advanced in a smoke/CO detector on the market. I have read some reviews that say that they don't comply with building regulations, but having read the White Paper from Nest I'm pretty sure from my understanding that they far exceed the requirements of the building regulations. The installation is quite easy albeit a few pointers I'll expand on in a minute. Site registration is quick and simple. The connection to the wifi (Assuming you can remember your password) is over in a jiffy. My only complaints are very minor regarding the installation into an existing circuit in existing wiring. The installation kit contains: 3 off 3 way connectors. 4 off Phillips screws. 1 off wire with integrated plug 1 off mounting plate 1 off alarm (with socket for plug) The choice of screws. My first observation is regarding the choice of Phillips screws. Most screws and screwdrivers, in the UK, are Posidrive, many people don't even know that there are two standards. You can use a Phillips screwdriver in a posidrive screw, but not the other way around. A Posidrive screwdriver will not fit into a Phillips screw. This means most people will not have the right screwdriver to put these screws i I've included a photo showing the difference between a Phillips and a Posidrive screw The number of connectors. My next observation is the supply of only 3 off 3 way connectors. Most existing wiring will require 4 off connectors. Those being Live, Neutral, Earth and the Link. I over came this with a single chocolate block connector, but it would have been so nice if Nest had included 4 connectors in their kit. See my 2nd picture. Lastly we come to the positioning of the plug. As can be seen in pictures 3 and 4 the socket that the plug engages with is offset from the centre. The design of the nest and its engagement with the mounting plate means you can rotate the unit to get it straight on the ceiling. However as the socket is offset, you require a large hole for the plug to rotate in as it sticks back pass the base of the Nest and also past the mounting plate into the wall board. I used a 47mm hole saw as can be seen in pictures 5 and 6. This gave the plug a nice hole to rotate in once the back plate was mounted to the ceiling. However most people will not not have a hole saw like this.

Easy to install as a replacement to wired smoke detectors. High quality and clear instructions.
I purchased two of these to replace hard wired traditional smoke alarms. The installation was easy. You open the box, download the Nest App if you don't already have it, use your phone to scan the code on the back of each unit and follow the instructions. The units talk to you and tell you what to do. The set up is done before you attach the detectors to your ceiling. I also took photos of the info on the back of each as this won't be visible when installed. Turn off the mains supply to your existing detectors, remove them and then make sure the centre hole in the ceiling or wall is nearly as big as the central hole in the new nest bracket. You may have to make it a bit bigger. Connect the supply wires to the connectors that come with the nest. These are simple push in connectors, so i didn't need wire cutters or strippers. My existing smoke detectors were connected to each other (mine was by a black wire). This is not needed as the Nests talk to each other over wifi rather than wire. I just pushed each end back into the ceiling void (the cable only joined one to the other). You then screw the nest back plate to the ceiling with the self tapping screws that come with it. The nest connectors then connect to a small plug that plugs into the back of the nest unit. Push all wires and connectors into the ceiling void (hence the bigger hole) and attach the main Nest unit to the backplate. A small twist secures it. Make sure your ceiling hole allows for this twist. You then switch the mains feed back on and the units will start taking to you again. Follow their instructions to test the units. You may need to press the big button on the unit twice to start this. You can then go back to the nest App and see the units in your list. You do NOT need Nest thermostat, all you need is one or more Nest Protect 2nd Gen and the Nest App, wifi and a smart phone. I have given it 5 stars for easy install and potential but until I see the alarm activated due to burnt toast I don't know how good it is. I'll update once I have seen it identify an incident. The product looks like a high quality item. Like top brand phones, the box and packaging is high quality and solid. It gives you confidence if they have designed the packaging so well the item inside is hopefully as high spec. If your wifi or electricity goes down, the units will still work as they have battery backups. They won't be able to notify your phone without wifi but will still detect and set off alarm if necessary. This is an expensive alarm - and the functionality may be more than you need, but if you want piece of mind when away from home, this is a great idea (if you don't mind your phone alerting you every time your teenagers burn the toast)

Nest Protect Review Battery Issues
I ordered 4 of these nest smoke detectors. On arrival they were 2 years into their 10 year life span. On installation after a couple of days, all 4 beeped showing low battery. These are all wired so assumed as 2 years old, maybe the internal lithium batteries had expired. I purchased a battery tester before committing to buying the batteries as the lithium batteries requested are a premium Price. All batteries showed good voltage/near new but I replaced them like for like anyway after factory resets, removing and reinstalling into the app didn’t work. 3 of the 4 have remained stable so far with no notifications of failure with one unit failing again after a week. These where like for like replacements for my previous model so no requirement to change harness or mounts and all previous worked. Either way I changed the power harness just in case to the one that came in the box, I also changed the wago connectors to those supplied and than installed new batteries again even though the previous 2 sets have full power. The unit beeped this morning after a week and so I have removed the battery and disconnected the power as the noise is loud. I have my concerns the others will go the same way in time and seeing as these already only have 8 years lifespan and not 10, I think these products may not last. Shame, my other ones purchased previously worked. I no longer have the boxes as had expected the problem to be fixed assuming factory reset and updated firmware would resolve the battery sensor issue (it seems). Around 400 spent, £10 per 4 batteries (lithium) everytime, expensive mistake
