Transformed our Virgin internet experience
As Virgin internet users (Vivid 200), we'd been muddling along with our Super Hub 3 for the past year, and frankly were getting to the end of our tether with the poor internet connectivity we were seeing. Wi-Fi devices were randomly kicked off the network, or would show as connected but with appallingly slow internet access (speed tests as low as 150 Kb/sec). Coverage was also poor, needing a booster for the back part of the house, which considering it's a small 3-bed semi with mostly stud walls, wasn't exactly stellar. What's more, like many people we are adding smart switches and sockets to the house, and with every new device, the creaking performance seemed to get even worse. The other thing sorely missing from the Virgin Hub 3 was any form of decent parental control. I ordered the R8000 hoping to resolve all of these issues, and a week in, I have to say I wish I'd done it sooner. I now get full internet bandwidth, or close to, on mobile devices, and the stability is absolutely rock solid. Also, the coverage reaches the entire house, and down to the bottom of our 30ft garden with no need for any form of extender. In short, it gives you a proper Wi-Fi network that allows connected devices to perform as you would expect. Installation was a doddle, and took all of 5 minutes to get it connected and working. Simply log in to the Virgin Hub 3's admin webpage, and switch the Hub into modem mode. This disables all of the Wi-Fi functionality on the Hub 3, and uses it only to connect to the Virgin network. Reboot the Hub 3, connect one end of the supplied ethernet cable to any port on the Hub 3, and the other to the yellow "Internet" port on the R8000, using the Nighthawk mobile app. Download the Netgear Nighthawk app to an Android or iOS device, connect the device to the Wi-Fi on the R8000 with the credentials on the sticker on the top of it, launch the app, and simply follow the instructions. It instantly identified the router, connected to it, installed the latest firmware update, prompted me to update the admin password (no brainer anyway), and then it all came to life and started working. There's a lot the Nighthawk app can't do, so after doing this, you will need to go to the admin web page for the R8000 (192.168.1.1 default) and log in with the admin credentials you just provided in order to complete the config, set your Wi-Fi security and SSIDs up, configure your access control and guest network, and so on. You'll be tweaking stuff for a while, but you really do get a basic, functioning Wi-Fi network inside of 5 minutes. The full parental control is achieved via the Circle app (by Disney, strangely), which does come at a monthly cost of £5 (with a month's free trial included), but it is absolutely brilliant. It gives you all the control you need, lots you probably don't, and is so easy to set up and use that it's worth every penny. I created profiles for both my daughters, and assigned the devices they use to them. The software then logs and manages everything these devices do on the network. It will enforce internet access times, bed times, and even let you control access to individual websites or apps. For devices used by adults, or static devices such as our Amazon Echos, smart switches or media streamers, you can set these as 'unmanaged', so that they work without any interference at all. The app also allows you to quickly and easily enable and disable internet access for an individual user with a single click, extend time limits quickly as a reward, and provides a full breakdown of the URLs and apps accessed by each user, with times and dates, and the amout of time spent on each. The other really handy thing is that you get a push notification to the app if a new device accesses the network. I have experimented with MAC address access control on Wi-Fi before, but it is a pain having to log in to the admin console every time you have a guest who wants access, or whenever you buy a new device. With this, you can leave access open, but get a notification whenever a new device logs in. It's a much better solution, for me anyway. Of course, you can still go a step further and restrict access by MAC address, if you prefer. Downsides? The router is a big old lump (see pic) which will need a decent amount of space, close to your Virgin Hub. It's also not cheap of course, but when you're paying £50 a month for 200 Mbit internet, your devices are struggling to see a tenth of that in reality, and the standard hardware supplied by the ISP simply isn't fit for purpose, the performance upgrade it delivers is instantly noticeable. It has been nothing short of a transformation in terms of the real internet speeds we are seeing, and I love the visibility it gives over what the kids are doing and when, as well as the easy control to stop unwanted behaviour. The difference between "proper" Wi-Fi, and what you get with the standard ISP provided junk really is staggering, both in terms of performance and configurability. Fantastic bit of kit. Highly recommended.

Massive Improvement on VirginMedia's SuperHub
As you'll guess from the headline, I'm a VirginMedia customer and I was frankly fed up resetting my router 3-4 times per day as the wifi fell over. I've got a lot of devices on my network (>30) and the VirginMedia hub seemed to struggle with that. I put the VM hub into router mode and as soon as I plugged the Nighthawk router in and connected a few devices, I noticed a massive difference in signal strength and speed. The wifi signal is getting to corners of my house that have always struggled with VM's superhub. I've had not problems re-connecting all my devices - I haven't gone for making the wifi name the same as I had on the VM hub as others have, choosing instead to have a new wifi name using the smart connect feature (one name for all bands instead of having 3 bands with different names). The additional features that I love - I can use OpenDNS and/or google DNS servers (these are about ten times faster than VM's DNS servers). With the VM hub, I'd offloaded DHCP to a raspberry pi to allow use of 3rd party DNS servers. Doesn't make a huge difference, but there is a lot less lag on webpages that have lots of DNS lookups. Armor Security was an unexpected bonus (I hadn't bought it with additional Security in mind). This is a subscription service but gives you a lot of additional security options including BitDefender apps for supported devices. If you have a lot of devices, the subscription is well worth the money. Circle Family controls - this allows me to have a lot more control over what my kids are up to on the internet. The basic package is free and allows filtering content for varying age groups. The paid option allows setting limits on Kids usage and bedtime across all their devices. Just to recap, stronger signal, faster speed, more control over settings, not having to reset your virgin media hub every few hours and extra security for your family. If you are a VirginMedia customer, this is the answer to any wifi problems you may have!

lovely fast AC router
Very nice and very fast router. I am upgrading to an AC laptop so wanted an AC router, (my old router is N1 mimo). This router is one of the first with tri band, most routers only have dual band, it intelligently connects devices using all three bands separately, older devices on slow band (2.4ghz) newer and faster devices on one of the two 5ghz bands. So far it works great on all my household devices, which include two laptops, two tablets, two mobile phones, one netbook, a ps3, a Nintendo Wii, two internet connected TV's, etc. The router has all the usual high end features, can have attached storage via usb (usb2 & usb3), can be used as a FTP server, print server, can be accessed remotely, has all the usual security features, WAP, WAP2, etc. You can turn off wifi, use the router as an access point, use MAC address filtering to control connected devices, and have two guest wifi networks, etc, etc. Setup was easy, took about 10 minutes and once setup you can easily manage the router functions using the built in web based software. Your internert connectiion to your devices will be faster and the connection will be more stable and coverage will be further. So far very happy, highly recommended.

DO NOT BUY, save yourself hours and more importantly avoid stress! - shocking quality of firmwares
I purchased this expensive router and had high expectations it would work very well: and so far bitterly disappointed with its shocking quality. I'm getting a replacement from Amazon (not right that they incur the costs of Netgear's poor product development and I suspect the replacement will have the same issues as it must be firmware, not hardware issues) Here are some of the issues: - less start with the only positive: good signal strength throughout the house ....but nearly impossible to connect to it! - 2.4ghz doesn’t even show from most devices (smart home modern devices such as Ring doorbell, ring flood camera, Amazon echo, etc) - on trying to attach to SSID keeps reporting "password is incorrect" which it isn't as it's still the default factory password (so no issues with long or complex password...). A few reboots and it sometimes will let you know without changing passwords on the client devices so clearly not a password issue or client devices, just poor R8000P firmware - I spent the last 2 days doing factory resets as it either becomes unavailable or get stuck in a reboot loop. Doing twice the same thing doesn't result in twice the same results! - accessing netgear genie to the router takes forever to load any pages (whether accessed wired or wireless...) and seems to cause even more instability if you ever happen to make a setting change! - it randomly reports losing access to the internet (even when the internert LED is white but the NetGear Genie web interface says it's down. Again, another restart usually it then reports internet is up. My configuration: - the R8000P is wired to a virgin media hub3.0 in modem only mode, the r8000p has firmware 1.4.1.30-1.2.26 and I kept all factory default settings and passwords. - I've turned off all logging to make sure it doesn't cause itself any overload...(another sign of poor firmware) - I tried with or without smartconnect and equally shocking really. all SSID are setup with default settings. - Whether dynamic qos is also turned on or off it seems the same, maybe worse when it's on but can't really explain categorically. at this price, you would expect a product thoroughly tested by Netgear - the HW is good, just a firmware that doesn't work (and this isn't new judging the netgear support forums, at least 1-2ys with similar issues across models). I opened tickets to their support team also but seriously not expecting anything as the product is configured as per factory settings and it simply doesn't work.

Top bit of Kit
With a son who has been complaining for weeks about lag on his online gaming issues and numerous calls to Virgin media to sort out their signal etc, we are supposed to have 200Mb Fibre and a Hub 3 but the signal between 2 x V6 boxes less than 10 feet apart and wired PC’s has been appalling! signal fallout an absolute joke, watching programs only for the TiVo box to tell you the signal has been lost from one TiVo to the other, or just so laggy the Wi-Fi just can’t keep up. From what I have read online & in forums etc (Though I am sure some other suppliers have similar issues) Seems the Virgin Hub 3 isn’t that good at distributing the signals to the devices that need the best connection – Please do look up the difference between “Bandwidth” and “Latency” as latency is the key! You may well be getting good signal coming in the Hub say 200mb, but it is how the signal is distributed and how quickly (Latency) to your devices that is the key and the Hub 3 is pants at doing that! Though they would never tell you! The latency with the Virgin was so bad during online gaming that you could say in Fortnight shoot first but get shot first because of the lag etc, I decided to go online, do some research and in the end I bought this beauty, and so far so good, high latency to those devices that ask for it, and connectivity Virgin could only dream of! Overall, It’s not that hard to set up, I worked out where it needed to go first, then unplugged all the hard wired devices and rerouted the wiring etc to make life easier! just some simple wiring, attaching of network and power cables, and then some good old common sense a bit of tweaking and all is fine. I also bought the smaller Gigabit switch (To the right of the Nighthawk in the pic) to allow me a few more wired network connections and this just connects to the Nighthawk through one the of LAN ports giving you 4 extra ports to play with. Once you get set up, give yourself several hours to do it, as it’s not a 5 min job, I’m no computer expert but have a little bit of an idea and it took me most of the day to place, fit, wire, download, test etc. The result so far is, by just using the Virgin Hub 3 to introduce the internet signal into the Nighthawk, there now appears to be no more latency lag on the online gaming front (The Hub 3 is ok for bringing a signal into your house but appallingly bad at distributing the signals to where they are actually needed!) but with this there is no issue at all, you just connect your Hub 3 in Modem mode (Video’s on you tube to show you from other users how to do it) and then you use the Nighthawk router to connect your devices where you can via a network cable or just use the Nighthawk’s superior Wi-Fi signal for all your mobile devices (You can connect up to 64 wireless devices to this router alone should you wish to). Regarding Virgin TV, The Virgin Wi-Fi signal for one of our TiVo boxes was often at 18% and would always cut out! and now, with this Wi-Fi its often over 90% with no drop out what so ever. Really happy just made the decision to buy this router, just sorry I didn’t not do it earlier and save the earache! I Also still need to tidy the cabling up as you can see!

Be patient setting up!
Whilst I consider myself reasonably tech savvy this took ages to set up. Switched my virgin hub 3 into modem mode then back to router 6+ times for the Netgear to try and pick it up. Also tried resetting hub 3 and router as well several times. The android nighthawk app to apparently 'help you' set it up with ease, didn't even pick the router up. The scanner built into the app wouldn't scan the QR code on top of the router. My WiFi devices would connect to the netgear and then kept saying you are connected but there is no Internet service. At this point I was about ready for throwing it out of the window. Anyway persevered trying to set it up, and I clicked on the WiFi properties on my windows 10 laptop, (still saying connected but no Internet service). This automatically opened the Web browser for netgear set up and it took me through a few prompts and configured and set it up, so simple, why oh why didn't the netgear app do this! After this, nighthawk app now finds my router and you can enable smart connect, shut down certain devices for kid device management etc. Netgear router is amazing. I was always having issues with my hub 3 having to reboot it as latency and general management of devices was appealing, if my children were on the xbox, everybody else suffered with speed. Didn't realise the hub 3 really struggles when you start to connect more and more devices on to your WiFi system. At the last count there was around 25 devices, the usual various alexas, sonus, smart TV's etc and the hub 3 was on its knees. Netgear handles this amount of devices with ease. I'm only on the M100 virgin deal, which states 108Mbps average. With my nighthawk, now getting 110Mbps consistently everywhere in the house. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit and wished I would have purchased it sooner! No more issues with single devices hogging bandwidth. The only thing which I disliked was the set up as it did not appear to be straight forward for me. Also another bug bear was setting up all the connected devices with the netgear router details and passwords. Perhaps for someone more into IT, they could perhaps have used the old virgin hub credentials this I'm afraid was beyond me.

OK, but not as good as I hoped.
I bought this to replace a top end Asus *66 router which was starting to drop the wifi and needing a reboot to resolve. I fancied a change was the only reason I went for a Netgear. So how does it fair compared to the old Asus (which had 3 external antennas)? Well, the signal output is not a great deal better on the 2.4GHz spectrum, if at all, but does seem a fair bit stronger in the 5GHz spectrum. I was expecting a lot more from the upside down dying fly design with more aerials than a police car to be honest. The footprint is also pretty huge, so make allowances for that. Regarding the config, this was fairly easy to set up, and then gives you a decent amount of advanced features you can tweak. One thing I do miss from the Asus which this lacks in any direct way, is the ability to time block certain devices by IP address or MAC address. When the kids were younger, this was the only way I could get them off their gaming systems and go to bed. You can disable certain devices from accessing the Internet at certain times. Whilst this is not as important now, I do have a NAS device which I can access over the Internet if I need to. I often see loads of hacking attempts towards this throughout the night (they'll struggle to get past the 18 character complex pass phrase though!), so I liked to be able disable it from the Internet through the night when I am in bed and not in need of it. Can't do that any longer. The QoS is as as good as the ASUS; just different to set up. This allows you to prioritise bandwidth for certain devices such as IP TV, etc. Don't want somebody downloading something to interfere with my streaming movies!! There is an app on Android (and probably the others as well) called Netgear Genie. I found this to be good for initial configs, but soon discovered that if I had configured something specific direct on the router web page from my PC, some settings would get overwritten by Genie, even if I didn't change them. So changing only B,C and D can also change or reset A that I had not requested to be changed in Genie. So in order to boost the signal in my average size but old semi house (so thick solid walls), I had to also invest in a couple of Netgear wireless extenders. I had Asus extenders on my Asus router before, and hoped that the signal output of this Netgear would mean I didn't need any. That wasn't the case though. So in summary, it is OK, almost good, but I was hoping for better - especially for what I paid for it.

Amazing piece of kit
Pretty Outstanding. I've owned a lot of routers in my time. This is by far the best. I bought it after reading loads of reviews on CNET, Which, Tom's Hardware, ARS. It's now like the router is in every room in the entire house. The speed and signal strength is phenomenal. It's easy to set up and works straight out of the box. Previously I needed powerlines, repeaters, extenders, bridges etc just to get a mediocre signal in some of the rooms in my 3 floor house with 2 foot thick brick walls. This takes care of it all. No problems streaming to multiple devices simultaneously and multiple online games. No detectable lag anywhere. It's like as if you had an ethernet connection in every room. I owned a virgin superhub, netgear WRT-54G, apple extreme base station, the standard BT Hub 2 & 3, Cisco WRT320N, etc, etc. This thing just blankets the entire house and then 60ft outside too. I've now switched off all the powerlines, extenders, bridges etc. Plus it looks like a piece of alien tech or something that should reside in the batcave. Expensive but well well worth it.

Nichts dergleichen. It is Huge, it is Bright, is Shiny.

Guter Tri Band Router
