Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online (PS4)

Been a big fan of the Neptunia series for a while, while this is different from the general Neptunia gameplay it still delivers the change very well. With the unreal engine in play you can smoothly play through dungeons without loading screens. Its got what you want from a fresh Neptunia game: humour, plot, gameplay, grinding, girls and fanservice of course!

tl;dr of this rambling review: I'm not fond of the game. I'd say pick it up if it goes on sale for about £15, otherwise watch a Let's Play of it or something.Whilst I'd love to give this game a glowing review having spent nearly £70 for the collector's edition direct from Iffy's European Online Store, I just cannot in good conscience do it. I managed to get Platinum within about 5 days of starting the game, with less than 30 total in-game hours, so the game's short. Like, really short. If you rushed the story, didn't bother with much of the side content, and just used the weapons/armour you find in the world and don't bother with upgrades it'd take 8-10 hours. Pretty standard for the base content of Tamsoft brawlers from this series, but not great for a simulacrum of an MMO.I used to joke that the previous Tamsoft developed Nep games had "press Square to win" combat. This is -literally- press Square to win! The skills you gain are largely trivialised unless you're playing as one of the characters with healing abilities, and even then you don't need to worry about it too much since if you have the main healer Blanc in your party under AI control, you can just have her do the healing until near the end of the game. You just need to set one or two attack skills that you use on a boss under Guard Break. The AI will take care of most enemies with their own skills unless you use a specific setting to make them not attack at all, or just focus on defence. The only maintenance you have to do to your party is to equip them with decent skills and armour, and they're golden. Unless they decide they want to just suicide charge an enemy... which they're quite prone to doing.I can't personally tell you if there's a Game Over state though, since I never once got a full party wipe offline.Also; ranged characters (Particularly Uni) are OP to the point of being broken from a combat perspective since a great deal of enemies in the game are melee focused.The game runs well at first even on a standard/slim PS4, but more than once I've had a bug where if you play for long stretches of time, it slowly decreases in frame rate until it becomes "4 Frames Online", and the PS4 crashes to the system menu - losing you whatever dungeon progress you've made to that point.Online is dead on arrival in Europe, due to region locking on the online servers again, same as with MegaTagmension. And even if you get an online match, you'll be lagging and rubber-banding everywhere unless you're the host. These issues still haven't been fixed nearly two months after launch, and considering IFI never brought over the patch to make large combo chaining actually worthwhile for Megadimension Neptunia VII that came out in Japan, I doubt they will ever be fixed.The story (what of it there is) is relatively entertaining and is where my extra star from the 1* I was wanting to give this comes from, but it's disappointing that there isn't a scene replay as the mainline titles have had since Victory. Pretty much everyone's character quirks have been dialled up to 11, which results in quite some hilarity.Speaking of characters, the attack button is also the button to activate Skip Dialogue mode in cut-scenes, and as there are a few random events without an alert marker on the map (where most do have one), I missed a fairly funny scene by just attacking blindly right into an event trigger. Very annoying.The game is... about 50-60% voiced in English? Most of the main story is, but a good chunk of the less important side content is silent unless you switch to Japanese voices. Noire's English voice actor has changed for this game, and she sounds rather hollow until the later parts of the game.So in conclusion, I don't think this is a very good game. Buy it on sale if you really want to, and don't be a fool like me and buy the collector's edition. Even if it does come with two copies of the soundtrack - since IFI screwed up the CD label print on the first batch.
