The Jungian Tarot Review: Understanding Deck is similar to new, aspiring doctor - This Deck is not for a beginner in Tarot. There are no numerals or wording on the cards. I have read that some of the first Tarot decks in existence followed this idea. However, those who have knowledge of Tarot cards, can easily identify the cards of the Major Arcana. In fact, there are 2 extra cards in the Deck which clearly show which cards in this Deck relate to the Major Arcana cards of other decks. The Court Cards can also be easily recognized, although they basically look alike, except for suit color and symbol. To me, the pip cards were the problem. What you see in the pip cards are the suit's symbols 1-10 of them, various patterns of the 4 elements and symbols of the suits, and various colorations. I don't agree with those who state that the pip cards are unimaginative, I think they are very imaginative and well thought out. The only problem was, that, for quite awhile, I had no idea as to how to interpret these cards, without memorizing the meanings given by Wang. There is no LWB with the deck, and the 3 books relating to this deck, gave me almost no help in my quest to understand the illustrations of the pip cards. I even contacted Tarot websites for help, but I received no response. I did not give up! I re-read some books on Kabbalah and read a book on Modern Astrology. So, I tried to understand the pip cards again. Using the text of Wang's books on this Deck, the astrological designations given to the cards by Wang, the Kabbalistic ideas regarding the Tree of Life Sephirot, and also by looking at the number and position of the suit symbols on each card, and the patterns and colors of the 4 elements on each card, I was finally able to understand the pip cards. After all that, I came to the conclusion that this is an amazing Deck. Wang believes that the Tarot should be used primarily for meditation, and that time should be spent on studying the cards. He was partially successful with me. I really didn't do much meditating on the cards, but I spent quite alot of time studying this Deck. In fact, I am still drawn to this Deck to analyze it some more. Now to why I say that this Deck is similar to a new, aspiring doctor. I always tell new, young and aspiring doctors and medical students, that in order to be successful, they have to have alot of patients. Similarly, in order to be successful in understanding the Jungian Tarot, you have to have alot of patience. Review: A deck for Qabalists - Or students of Qabalah - For those who are looking for a practical deck for readings and divination who do not have knowledge or are not inclined to learning qabalistic symbolism , this deck may not satisfy. The minor cards are basic , but are coloured in the scales of the four worlds on the Tree of life. Also some basic knowledge of qabalistic symbolism would be helpful, for example The Fool , which is normally numbered 0 has an illustration of an egg the cosmic egg which takes the 0 shape and is entwined by a serpent. It also has a mandala at the bottom which illustrates the first swirlings rashith ha gilgalim the primum mobile or first movement in Qabalah, it also has a crown , symbol of Kether illustrated. There is much qabalistic symbolism in this deck , and if you are familiar with some of it you may find that it is useful for readings and divination. I have found that using Minor cards that are not heavily illustrated can be an aid to my intuition . I would recommend this deck for students or those with an interest in Qabalistic symbolism and pathworking on the Tree of life.

Not for amateurs
I love that it comes in a two part box instead of the usual card-box. I'm still getting used to the artwork. It's more complex than Rider-Waite, which is good, but still fairly simplistic and lacking connections to other disciplines. The artist does not include astrological affiliations even though the booklet that comes with the deck strongly implies that these are paramount. The booklet also clearly states that the cards are meant to be used with a trio of reference books: *"Tarot Psychology"* , *"The Jungian Tarot and its Archetypal Imagery"* , and *"Perfect Tarot Divination"* - this was not made clear to me from the website description. But the booklet itself is fairly useless and at least one of these books is essential to understanding the imagery. The booklet itself only gives the names of the cards, which is fortunate since they aren't on the cards themselves, and the basic meanings; without any suggestions for usage or even a basic layout! Not having any writing on the cards is good in a way. It allows you to choose for yourself whether to use the names provided (coins, pentacles or disks? Knight or Prince? e.g.). It also makes it harder to learn the names and the order of the cards - especially the Arcana cards. Increasing the difficulty significantly for experienced users and threefold that for beginners. I had more complaints but I am realizing that this has gotten a lot longer than I intended. Now I'm wondering if I should drop my rating to three... But no, in the end I really do love the deck overall. I'm just realizing that it will require a LOT more work to use than I originally expected.

More than first assumed..
It's easy to understand how at first glance this deck could leave the customer wanting. The minor arcana are dull and the major are generic compared to most decks one would encounter. This is not, however, the case. The alchemical and qabbalist iconography and symbolism is incredibly well-represented even down to the color coding and elements physical proximity in the minor. The "generic" nature of the major only adds to the depth when the collected language of one's cultivated iconographical arsenal is employed in tandem with imagination. All while integrating psychology. A valiant effort at no small task. Bravo. This ain't your grandpa's Waite deck. This one has thought put into it. I beg you. Before you return it, do your homework.

Bellissime immagini, molto evocative. Ottima finitura: sembrano resistenti.

Before getting this deck, keep in mind several elements: the minors have their own system, the whole deck has different astrological correspondences, the majors have some drastic reinterpretations with specific preferences in Jumgian thought and the little booklet is not super helpful in most of these elements, but neither is it terrible. I personally found that the deck's system for the minors was rather easy to learn and use, and if you are familiar with the zodiac and planets, flows quite nicely. However, it results in drastically differwnt meanings for most of the pips. Don't be shocked to find that 10 of Cups is the worst minor arcanum in the deck. Also, keep in mind that the system only uses cardinal signs, which might be a minus. The little booklet gives the meanings just fine, and you can look up meanings by googling "planet in sign", as in "Jupiter in Libra". The majors are the real highlight of the deck in my opinion. I found them deeply evocative and mysterious. They are highly reinterpreted according to Jungian archetypes, his view of the psyche and mythic interpretations. The courts feel rather bland amd repetitive in illustrations, but the system is very interesting. Keep in mind that the figures are all white, and some women are connected to the underworld and have cthonic implications. As for the three companion books, I've read Tarot Psychology and The Jungian Tarot and its Archetypal Imagery. Tarot Psychology is essentially the book that should have come with the deck. It goes deeper into all the cards (2 pages for majors and 1 page for pips and courts, but the font is rather large). It was useful for the minor arcana, but was confusing for the Majors. It also gives some basic exercises for meditating on the Majors and lists the correspondences of the Minors. The Jungian Tarot and its Archetypal Imagery is how I really understood the Major Arcana. It reads rather academically and unpacks the reinterpretations Wang did in the deck in a fair amount of detail. Recommended reading for this deck.
