Buy Geometry For Dummies, 3rd Edition 3 by Ryan, Mark (ISBN: 9781119181552) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Covers the essential requirements. - Great for brushing up on various area formulas. Review: Very good. - I really like this book. I have looked for a geometry book a few times: it was the only part of maths I really enjoyed at school nearly fifty years ago. I loved the problem solving and the elements of pattern and shape that are involved: I was looking for a little bit of mental gymnastics to keep the brain cells firing. And this book fits the bill perfectly. If I knew or remembered nothing about the subject, then I think this might be a bit of a struggle, so I definitely don't think this is for the complete novice, but the knowledge and skills level is not incredibly high, certainly not aimed at an A' level ability that one reviewer has implied. It is clear despite one or two style glitches one experiences with US textbooks, but that's not a problem. Elements of the subject are introduced appropriately and with plenty of examples and there is definitely a sense of building one's knowledge and skills base. As a former teacher, though not of maths and science, I would certainly recommend this to anyone with a little basic mathematical awareness needing support with their maths at GCSE level. And as a 'fun' stimulus for anyone else! I'm sorely tempted to get the workbook!

Good on proofs
I'm a GCSE tutor and bought this to fill in a few gaps in my own knowledge and, in particular, to improve on proofs and the teaching of them. Having read the book now, I'm certainly a lot better - there are A LOT of proofs, meticulously explained! Only two problems really: first is that is a US book. Some terms/theorems are described very differently from their UK counterparts, which caused confusion here a couple of times! I can't deduct a star for that of course, but the one thing that did drive me mad, and did result in my skipping a few proofs, is that, SO often, the diagram was one page and the (often long) proof was on the page overleaf. A couple of times I photocopied the diagram page, but couldn't always do that, eg when reading on a train. If there is to be a further edition, *please* put the diagram and the proof on the same page - SO much easier to follow the proof than constantly having to turn back after reading each step. But, overall, the book did the trick. This dummy is now better at writing proofs, and better at explaining them. In terms of the level the book's aimed at, I'd agree with others and say that, really, the reader needs to be happy with at least middle-grade GCSE geometry and algebra to get the most out of this book. I think omplete beginners would very soon feel discouraged. It would be good for someone who loves maths and would like to hone their geometry skills to get that Grade 9!

Not a primer but some pre-knowledge will be helpful. Recommended with some reservations
'Geometry For Dummies' is probably one of the least typical titles within the long-established 'Dummies' series. Most are computer-related, although a few are hobby-oriented (wine-making, for example). With technical subjects, the 'Dummies' series is considered to broadly be of Beginner to Intermediate level although some are Beginner only, e.g. those including 'Essentials' or 'For Seniors' in their titles. Not so with this; it is probably mostly 'Intermediate' with nods towards the Beginner and 'Advanced'. Having left school before the introduction of GCSE and not knowing the current syllabus etc but comparing to O-Level maths, the book appears to be written at a higher level probably equating to current A-Level standards but specifically to match American High School requirements. While it will not provide the answer to any specific problem, it will help calculate it when various essential measurements are provided. It starts by discussing lines, angles and various basic shapes including squares and rectangles, cubes, rhomboids and cylinders. It also covers diameter and circumference and calculating areas and volumes of several shapes. Formulas and the importance of the proportion that is 'pi' are also included as are many of the standard theorems such as Pythagoras'. Despite the inclusion of some 'basics', it is not a primer! A companion 'Geometry Workbook' within the 'Dummies' series may also prove useful at several levels. There is also 'Geometry Essentials for Dummies' which covers more of the basics in a gentler manner and may better suit those needing to refresh their understanding or had long forgotten what was taught at school. This book may prove useful at various levels and for a variety of purposes and the information within it may expand upon current standard textbooks. The advantage of the 'Dummies' series of books is with their light style of writing, sometimes almost casual, simplifying subjects and making comprehension of the subject as easy as possible - easier in some subjects than with others. Authors used are experts in their respective field(s) and may also have prior relevant writing experience. The book is recommended but primarily for readers with some recent practical experience of geometry but it may suit a wider readership.

A super study support and text.
It is great to get all of geometry together in one book, instead of peppered throughout maths texts. This is a great For Dummies book for anyone with a fascination for the mathematics of geometry or any high school or university student of mathematics. The book is clear and approachable and well laid out in typical For Dummies fashion. It starts at the beginning with the basics of 1 dimensional and 2 dimensional shapes and goes from there into 3D and more - so at the beginning it is actually primary school level and at the end it is university level. It is comprehensive, superbly explained - not just the basic how-to, but much more besides - from hints, tips and clever tricks to the proofs and their rationale. It really is a super text and study support for any student.

Not sure if I got unlucky but the print quality is extremely poor and the words are not readable.

I just love these "for Dummies" books! This one brought me memories from school and high school. A great refresher on the Geometry subject.

Great help.
