Did you have mold growing on lid?

Yes i do. It needs to be cleaned a minimum of once a week. Standing water has that problem

How well does this work with hard water? I expect to need to replace the filter more often but does it make the water taste better?

We have well water , which is full of lime & harder water . Before buying this my daughter brought the brita which we had to change the filter like every week due to hardness of water & lime ,calcium .So we gave up , then all my small appliances started getting greener or stop working even when I scrubbed what could be washed , I was going threw lime away like crazy I had to use lime away every week and for the coffee pot the descaling light would come on every week . So I seen this & thought wow natural filters . This is /was our last hope & once I got it I set it up as instructed and have not notice any more green/lime in ice tea maker & as for the coffee maker the descaler light has not come on since as for the taste awesome crisp tasting water like you were drinking right out of a natural stream. We keep it filled all the time which you have to keep the filter wet at all times once it is placed in the container , I take out once weekly to wash the unit while keeping the filter in a bowl of water than replace filter & fill full & place in fridge the only down fall we found was the amount of room it takes up in the fridge  but so very well worth it .

How tall is this? Will it fit on a fridge shelf that is 9.75 inches tall?

I just received the unit. Is it normal for the water filtering down to a trickle in one hole after 3 gallons of water?

Please note that before using the filter cartridge, it is important to soak and rinse it thoroughly for approximately 5 minutes.
