Fifth Element [Blu-ray] [2010]

A favourite family film. Well until my daughter dyed her hair the same as Milla Jovjovich’s Leeloo. We laugh about that now!

I first saw this when working abroad for several days at an exhibition, and it was looped on the screens of the stand opposite ours. To my amazement I was still not bored with it when we packed up at the end; for an SF enthusiast like me this is most unusual because all too often Hollywood SF is so clichéd and full of plot holes it is not worth watching. But this modern fairy tale, where as usual Good after many trials and tribulations eventually triumphs over Evil, is from Europe. The Fifth Element broke the usual commercial studio rules and showed Hollywood how it should really be done; resulting in high quality Space Opera with such classic style and superb acting and glorious imagination one can forgive it anything. I bought my copy in Nov 2003 soon after I returned home. Bruce Willis plays Bruce Willis as usual, and yet somehow the character is appropriate to the part. The heroine is beautiful and vulnerable and yet redoubtable and necessary, the villains are suitably villainous and essential to the plot, the military display their customary intelligence, and Chris Tucker adds lunatic spice to tip the whole film over the precipice into an eminently watchable delight. This film is frequently repeated on commercial TV, and each time we say, "Ah, we've got that one, lets cut the commercials and watch the DVD instead." And that is when one notices that the 5.1 sound and 2.35:1 picture quality on the DVD are both significantly better than the usual bit-rate-starved Broadcast, even though watching and listening on the same big screen and surround system. My Special Edition 2-DVD version has on the second disc a number of interesting extras including a 'Making of' documentary, four revealing and interesting featurettes about the conceptions behind the film, and the usual trailers and advertising material used to originally promote the film. The last item is a tempting teaser that this was only the first half of the story, but alas so far Besson has said that a sequel will not happen.

One of my old favourites from the 90s. Feeling like ‘that guy’ that says they don’t make movies like that anymore - but they don’t! This was all about practical effects and I loved the costumes, the aliens and the outfits style across the movie! So cool! And an epic story!

I absolutely loved The Fifth Element. It’s one of those films that feels completely unique even years later, and every time I watch it, it’s still entertaining from start to finish. The visuals and world-building are incredible, especially considering when the movie came out. The futuristic city, costumes, characters, and overall style give it such a distinctive look that stands out from other sci-fi films. It has this perfect mix of action, comedy, sci-fi, and weirdness that somehow all works together brilliantly. Bruce Willis was great as Korben Dallas, and Milla Jovovich absolutely stole the show as Leeloo. Their chemistry made the movie really fun to watch, and Gary Oldman as Zorg was such a memorable villain as well. What I love most about the film is its personality. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it still manages to tell an exciting story with loads of iconic moments throughout. The soundtrack, humour, and action scenes all add to the experience and make it feel genuinely special. Overall, I think it’s a classic sci-fi movie that still holds up amazingly well today. Stylish, entertaining, funny, and completely unforgettable.

A pesar de que pone Reino Unido, la película esta en versión de USA y de hecho es Blu-ray zona A, por tanto no se puede reproducir en Europa salvo reproductores multiregión, no confundirse aunque ponga Reino Unido. Otro detalle es que el audio en español es Español Latino, no de España, tener todo esto en cuenta que a mi no me quedó claro a la hora de comprarlo. Aun así si podéis visualizarla la calidad es 10.

très bon film de science fiction

This is a review of the 2015 Blu-ray release. 1 x 48-GB disc (movie + bonus material) I wanted to own a copy of this movie. After reviewing different editions and comparing snippets, I settled on the 2015 release in plain full HD. No regret! I wanted to watch the movie as I remembered it: colorful. I was a bit turned off by the 2017 4K Sony release. I looked at snippets of the 2020 release on YouTube, but it wasn't as I remembered it. When studios push for HDR releases, they also alter the contrast, which is off-putting to me. Additionally, the grain structure seems to be enhanced, which I find distracting. I hoped the 2020 release would be better, as I was told it's more colorful. Sadly, the post-processing and coloring for this version isn't true to form; it seems they used the original negatives and not the final edited version. As a result, the coloring and some cuts were not how I actually saw it as a kid; "imitated" might be a better word. Then there's the bonus material. It seems bonus material isn't common anymore, so if you want actual additional content, the older releases seem to offer more. The 2020 release offers nothing. The 2015 release comes with a pleasing amount of bonus material. The 1080p version is lower resolution, but this softness tames the heavy grain structure, which reduces the distractions as the grain size changes scene to scene. There is no HDR, so no worries about contrast being overdone either. The soundtrack is Atmos, so it's wonderful. But the final clincher was that the 2015 FHD release was about 1/7th the cost of the 2020 4K release. I watched this movie with full delight. No part of the movie felt wrong or not as I remembered it. A couple of scenes were a tad brighter than I remembered, like the city scene, but in a good way. The grain noise was not noticeable in the vast majority of the film, and I didn't once wish a part was HDR-enhanced. Colors were pretty much as I remembered them. With the money I saved, I'll invest it, and perhaps when there's an 8K AI-enhanced release in another ten years, I'll have saved up enough to buy two copies of that.
