Valuable starting point
From a non-drawer’s perspective.Interesting book with lots of useful information and methods of drawing.Obviously written “in a time” but should not detract away from how useful it has been to aid a beginner (me).

Excellence Does Not Age.
This is a classic. Loomis has a massive following among artists who produce comic and graphical art. It may have been produced in the late 1930's - but is as every bit as relevant now as it was then. In some respects the book was ahead of it's time - in any event it is a gem. The tutorials are easily digestible and excellent. There are some parts of the book which have drawings of racial stereotypes from the period in question. This book will therefore give you insight into not only artistic technique but social mores and fashions of the period. The tone of the book is light, with fun and enjoyment being as important as the serious techniques used to produce the many examples within this manual. My copy is the hardback version. It is now one of my prized possessions. If you like comic art and are thinking of producing humorous cartoons or the next Spiderman this book should be in your collection.

IS THIS THE HARDBACK VERSION ? YES!!!
Just to reasure any prospective buyer. That the version priced at £29:99 IS THE HARDBACK COVER. as you probably know these Titan reprints are all facsimile copies of the origian loomis books, But I read a couple of reviews from the paper back version that sounded quite worrying about the pages being out of order and how only black was used to print instead of the dual Black and blue inks used in the originals.. (The blue lines showing the "Basic Forms").Well this 29:99 edition does have black and blue print and a very sturdy dark blue hardbound cover, (not the semi bendable kind either) the orange and black jacket with the (Mr Monopoly type guy) on the front is the dust jacket that surrounds it.I won't repeated in length what other reviewers have elequently expressed about the virtures of this great book.Just to say that like many others who were trying to learn how to start drawing. I bought many other guides, from various publishers and cellibrated teachers, such as barrington barber adrian hill and although all were of some help. I wish I'd discovered this book first, because you can get some fun and credible results right from the start and the book builds and grows on these as you turn every page.I'd Also recommend splashing the extra on the hardback version for simple practicle reasons, it's very helpfull if any book you are studying from opens to the page you wants and stays open comfortably.. unlike many tight bound paperback ones where you need a Stanley Vice or two 50 kilo weights on each page before you can let go and have it remain open. No such prob with the hardback.

All black and white pics
This is a version of an old book, hence many pictures look outdated, but it is still relevant in terms of drawing the human head and figure. There is no colour inside this book at all, not even when the text mentions blue lines in the illustration. It has the look of photocopies in places. But this book is a nice size, something close to A4 I think, so the text is readable and the pictures are not bad to copy despite having several on a page. The title doesn't really make it clear that this book is about drawing people, many heads and faces, figures in different poses, and a few others, feet and hands, even hats and shoes. Many are funny characters. Great for practicing variety.

Great book to learn to draw
Splendid book, cute and fun. Unbeatable technique to learn easily how to draw characters. Without any knowledge or talent, you can start drawing by following the step by step explanation. Genius!

Can not recommend enough!
This is by far the best books for learning anatomy in cartoon fashion and passing them off as believable people. Not to mention the ample amounts of easy to understand drawing exercises to practice. Helped me realise how the angles and positioning of faces work and has exceedingly enhanced my artistic skills

A lot of great information
Leafing through this book can be deceptive because it looks very simple! Loomis starts you off with all kinds of circles almost none of which are anywhere near perfect, and he shows you how to make a head and face which actually looks like a head and face. This in itself teaches a lot. He progresses through still simple but increasingly more perceptive exercises. He ends up with something like the classic Loomis head, and then onto figure drawing that's somewhere between stick figures and good gesture drawing. The book shows its age and has a lot of distracting typos and the examples are largely adult male. I think it's a great book for showing an absolute beginner he/she can do with consistent practice but not taking it too seriously, but just playing around with a pencil. Definitely recommend this book

Great - Großartig!
(F.W. Bernstein)Man sollte unbedingt die gebundene Version kaufen!A wonderful book that slowly and entertainingly introduces the user to the Loomis method for caricatures and portraits. The moralists who speak of racism here obviously do not understand the purpose of caricatures. Whites, blacks, yellows and "redskins" are taken for a ride. Anyone who sees racism against blacks should rethink their attitude. And of course these allegations - although in English - come from Germany, where the better people live nowadays."The harshest critics of the moose used to be moose themselves." (F.W. Bernstein)You should definitely buy the bound version!
