Detailed Introduction to Orienteering!
This read was intensive and required focus. Some jargon early on required constant visits to the glosary and reviewing previous material. Repetition made instruction absorption a bit tiring. Having given a negative observation the book will take a novice orienteering person through the basics and put them into the field with confidence! Just have to wade through lots of material. This book offered me more information about orienteering but it is definitely not a page turner.

Great book to take your orienteering to the next level
I don't know about you, but I kind of stumbled on orienteering by accident and I never really had anyone to teach me the finer points or coach me along. Fast forward a few years and someone finally started giving me some pointers, which made a HUGE difference in my performance, after which I picked up this book to do some further learning. This book does as excellent job of outlining basic strategy and helps you make sure you have your head right while you're out there, and if you're not aware, orienteering is definitely a thinking sport. If you feel like you're Orienteering knowledge base has some holes in it, I definitely recommend this book.

This is a good start when learning orienteering
This is a good start when learning orienteering. Easy to comprehend information. And a must for those of us who venture into the wild miles from civilization. Don't just toss a compass into your pack to have. Without the right knowledge, you'll only know your directional points.Hike like a Jedi. -Shamrockdude

Great basic book
I ordered this book as a manual to teach basic orienteering from and it served me well. The exercises are best suited to middle school ages, but will work for all with some modifications.

a bit dry
A nice and thorough introduction to the sport, but a bit dry and slow as any technical work would be

Explains the sport of orienteering very well!
If you're looking for a book that will teach you how to use a compass and read a map, take a class and go practice. If your interested in competing in orienteering event or adventure races, this is a good resource.

a great navigation book
I brought this book to remind myself on how to navigate when out waking, i have no need for running and jumping around the local woods and parks, but this book is to cover for those sort of people too. its really strong point is the way it teachs navigation and how as a runner you shorten the use of the map and compass to give you faster resualts and it shows you how to navigate quickly and accuratly, if you ever look for a book thats the founding stone for you learning navigation, then this is the book to get and hold on to
