Does the back side protect the back? Is it well cushioned and isolated? I wouldn't like feeling corners and angles of whatever I'm taking.

No cushioning but I didn't notice this as a problem using the pack daily for a fortnight in the tropics. Judicious packing might help. I found it light, capacious for what it is and ideal as a day pack.

Could you fit two large beach towels in this bag?

Depends how thick they are but probably yes. This is a really good bag.

The Amazon site gives the dimensions as 27x 14 x 48. I gave this rucksack as a present so it isn’t here to measure.

could you fit a 15" laptop in here?

Not entirely sure as I don't have one; but probably. I'm not sure I would wish to have it in there even if it did fit. This is because of lack of padding, lack of a lock, & queries about how waterproof it is.
