Can this test 3v button cells?

yes- put in between red black jaws which have -+ sensors. result displays on the separate lower needle scale - I've just discovered all this so your question was educational for me too.

Yes, it has a marker on it for 9 volt battery.

Do you test button batteries in the same place as the aa or aaa?

Yes. Pull the dccontact out slightly and insert the battery. The polaarity (-ve) is shown on the instrument. Close the contact and read the vallue from the bottom scale. On the digital version, the condition of the battery is given on the back of the instrument.

the product description says nothing about what size of battery will fit into the tester. Will it deal with AA and AAA batts? Anything bigger?

It will test AA, AAA, 9volt (underneath), it also says PP3, mini cell (though I've not tested those), and the larger 'C' and 'D' batteries, though the larger ones only just fit in. But they DO fit in. A good buy. Hope that helps.
