Yes, you're advised to use the same thread top and bottom. The only jamming problem I've had is using thick fabric when I didn't read the instructions about this. There is a black button on the zig zag foot which you have to push with your left hand while lowering the foot with you right hand. This locks the foot to the fabric. Let go of the button before you start sewing.

Not really a heavy duty machine. The leather would break the needle.
