The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Disorder

Essential reading
An intelligent and thorough book which has greatly helped my understanding of my boys' needs - I have 2 with autism and both are affected by sensory issues, and in different ways, just to add to the fun! The book demystifies much of their behaviour and provided me with practical ways of coping with and advancing their behaviour. This is now part of my essential help library and I can't recommend it enough to anyone concerned about a child.Update: 7 years on - I had 3 children diagnosed with autism. Luckily, I was put in touch with an occupational therapist for a while who was trained in sensory issues, one child loved being squashed & unbelievably small tight spaces; another was the opposite; two can’t bear noise etc etc. I tried many things over the years, adapting as the kids changed, fiddle toys, gym balls, chair exercises, weighted blankets, cold air fans, tactile seat cushioned wedges, ribbed pens, heavy backpacks, heavy boots - I found gradual exposure, combined probably with ageing & their natural development, reduced their needs and now sensory needs are much less of an issue. I think the earlier you identify & meet these needs, the better the outcome. Doing that becomes a natural process but initially it felt like magic and took a while for me to get my head around it - very exciting, interesting & of huge benefit to me & my family

Great Book
I bought this book as my son was diagnosed with sensory integration disorder and I wanted to find out more about it. Although American written, and we are in the UK, I have found it very easy to follow. The checklists for different aspects of the disorder are helpful. I would recommend this book to any other parents with a child who has sensory processing issues.

This book really helped me to suss out my son. I knew, he was different from my other sons but couldn`t quite put my finger on it until someone sent me a link to SPD. I then was told about this book and it explains everything so well. If you have a child that might be affected, then this book is an eye opener. Although let me warn you, the UK does not easily provide therapies for your children and it is a fight to get people to listen to your concerns.

Lots of different processing issues grouped together
Perhaps useful as a reference, but not easy to read through. The concept of all Sensory Processing Differences as one type of issue across different senses with increased or reduced sensitivity isn't convincing.

I was advised to purchase this by a doctor whilst my son was undergoing various assessments for behaviour that was at the time very bizarre and unexplainable. He has since been diagnosed with Autism and SPD.I can only say that its almost like this book was wrote about my 9 year old son. What previously caused stress and arguments due to his bizarre mannerisms and seeming in ability to sit still etc. is now accepted and channelled and to a certain extent controlled through certain strategies. Indeed, since reading the book I can relate to him and now understand why he does certain things, making for a much calmer household and more importantly a much happier and settled 9 year old.If your child is suspected of suffering from sensory processing disorder (SPD) then in my opinion this book is essential reading.

Thank you.
Haven't read yet but arrived next day with Amazon prime, bought this book to try work out some of my severely autistic 3 year old sons behaviours, just from reading the back cover I know this book is for me. He has many many sensory problems, no help from the NHS, diagnosed and pushed out the door with not even so much as a leaflet, very sad & very shocking for these poor children (& for the parents) with the lack of support, I would literally try anything to help my son, so really looking forward to this book. This is an excellent book, invaluable and very detailed. Had a lot of stuff in that I did not know. Very useful over time, can be used again and again. Definitely buy this best book of it's kind I have seen, good for Autism Aspergers, ADHD and sensory processing disorder.
