At The Bbc: On Air 1974-1985

I love UFO and as far as live albums, Strangers in the Night is one of the best on the market. Even though this has a few repeats of Rock Bottom, Doctor Doctor they are different enough to listen to them all. I downloaded all five discs (six total one is a DVD) into itunes and made a two disc compilation of ever song not on Strangers in the Night.

They've been around since I was in high-school ... coming into view at the very tail end of the British Invasion. I have had their albums "No Heavy Petting" and "Strangers In the Night Live" on vinyl since the late '70s ... "Petting" is one of their best, if not best studio releases. Prior to this past X-Mas, after hearing "Too Hot Too Handle" on FM radio, I looked through the UFO catalog on Amazon, and listed a couple of their CDs on my "X-Mas Wish List", and gave it to my family. I was pleased when I recieved " Hot & Live '74-'83" and "No Heavy Petting" as gifts ... I have played them regularly since ... I have their "Anthology-Best Of " on CD, as well as "Strangers ... " , but after getting those other two CDs for X-Mas, I decided to dig deeper into their catalog, and order more CDs of their's ... hence my purchase of "On Air - UFO @ The BBC '74-'85" ( and also ther concert DVDs " Live @ Rockpalast '80" and "Live @ Oxford '85) ... The "On Air ... " set was a bargain, costing less than $25 for five CDs and one DVD ... and the music contained therein is superb ... capturing the band during it's various personnel "lineups" ... the highlight of which for me is the CDs containing Paul Chapman on lead guitar ... he is every bit the player that Michael Schenker is ... The only weak part of this set is Disc 5 ... on which 'Atomik Tommy' is the lead guitarist ... this disc, while genrally OK, does not match the quality of the other four. Lastly, the DVD shows the band playing on various TV outlets ... one of which looks to be 'lip-synched' ... but enjoyable none the less ... the overall performances are solid though ! Phil Mogg is certainly an underated front-man / vocalist ... but he is perfect for this band ! Pete Way on bass, and the other members provide energized performances as well ... In summation, this set should be in any UFO fans collection ... it stands up well along side their other major "Live" sets such as "Strangers In the Night" and " Hot & Live" ... UFO as a group never made the upper echelon of hard rock bands ... but they are a very tight group, and have given us no frills, consistent, and very enjoyable music for 40+ years ... you cannot go wrong buying this "On Air" set ... or several others in their extensive catalog !!

To most UFO fans, all you gotta do is say "Archive" and our nipples get hard. This package spans the early years from '74 to '85, and , to be honest, there are a lot of repeated songs throughout the 6-disc set. But, hey,get creative and edit your playlists ,and end of problem. You still cannot find this many great live versions of all of these old gems for this low a price. And you get a fair smattering of both the "Michael Years" and the "Chapman Years", and 1 disc that centers on the "Atomik Tommy M Years" that no one wants to discuss (mainly 'cause it was material written in a style that most diehards couldn't stomach). Of course, you all know that disc 6 is a dvd with live footage from The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Oxford Road Show.Great footage! Well worth having!

I have listened to UFO with vinyl in the beginning. I have spent many a small fortune between then and now. I do not have any regrets, but like many other historic bands, and I truly mean historic, I fell that sometimes I am at a loss as to what is really new. I have the box set's for this band and that. I do not think they are re-releasing cuts, but all of these bands seem to have a million of them. I do enjoy lost recordings, but really some of them stink and then you might have a gem. If you are a die hard and really need to listen to every good or bad rendition then chop away. UFO, Led Zep, Neil Young, Bob D. etc. The archives are killing my pocket book, I mean no one could have been at everyone of all of these concerts or have heard songs left off of there album's. Vinyl, 8 track, cassette, CD, DVD, MP3, micro chip!!! I remember the back side of a 45 was the thing. I guess I am just getting old, but I don't think I can do this anymore. But, Long Live Rock and Roll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of Live shows in this collection. Favorites include "Love to Love" and "Doctor, Doctor"Good sound quality! Very happy to hear it on the first listen and left this in my car CD player for two months straight.

UFO one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time!This set is excellent! I had some of this on othercd's but not all and with the bonus dvd I had to getit and glad I did! The early stuff with Schenker isjust worth the price alone but the later stuff from1985 is really rare and showed Phil Moog still hadUFO at the top of their game! the bonus dvd whichI had some of it but the 1981 tv show with songsfrom Mechanix is awesome and it's live and theysound incredible! I didn't get to see this tourso for me it's worth the price! If your a UFO fanor hard rock fan buy this now! a must have!

Outstanding live work from this great hard rock band from England. Strangers in the Night is in the top 5 best live albums ever and this box set is about as good. The DVD is cool and gives a taste of the band playing in their heyday.Highly recommended for any fan of classic hard rock and guitar genious!

Awesome CDs a must for every UFO fan most of UFO live CDs are taken off this box set so by this box set
